NintendoFanKimmy's Movie Reviews #1 - Men in Black
Hello, everybody! This is my first movie review, so I offer my apologies in advance for possible disorganization and/or any other flaws this review may have. Constructive criticism is appreciated, especially when it criticizes my own criticism. That's what "Review Reviewers" do, right? Anyhow, please enjoy, fellow readers, and I hope to hear your feedback and own opinions on this review and the movie it's about!
Visual Effects: 8/10
Despite my great liking to this movie, I must admit that its visual effects are not the greatest. However, it was produced in 1997, and for its day, I am positive that they were remarkable. Still now, they are pretty good, and they captured my attention, therefore earning this category's well-deserved 8 out of 10. I had better get to explain why the movie's visual effects were 'not the greatest' yet 'pretty good' in the first place. Firstly, the animated aliens' designs seemed slightly cheesy, and did not impress me to the extent I thought they would. Its saving grace, however, was its captivating nature that had me laughing quite often throughout the movie. Something I haven't gotten around to made me enjoy seeing the animated aliens in action, yet technology's capabilities have evolved since then, and can produce astonishing effects to even greater heights. Regardless of the aliens, the explosions and booms and other spark-generating madness on the agents' sides were positively thrilling and excellently done, making the movie a blockbuster but with brains - at least partially.
Soundtrack: 9/10
Alright, please do not jump to conclusions straight away here and say I'm an overly generous 'fan' who's praising the movie's aspects unnecessarily for attention, but these rankings are published in all honesty, whether they are believable to you or not. I absolutely loved this movie's soundtrack. This is primarily because of the famous title theme that 'hypes' me up before the beginning of the movie even commences. The music used throughout the film was wonderful, and it was in perfect synchronization with the plot and events associated with it. There are a few themes that could have used slight working on here and there to sound more interesting or more appropriate with the corresponding scene, yet the pieces, overall, were fantastically composed, and I was especially delighted during the scenes in which action mostly dominated the atmosphere featuring Agents K and J getting down to some seriously important ass-kicking business.
Character Development: 8/10
This was yet another one of those movies which got me attached to the characters and feel what the situation would be like if I were in their shoes. Agent J, previously known as James, has a decision to make - joining the Men in Black force to bust the aliens and save the world while being a silent, unknown hero, or remaining a normal citizen yet still known as a regular person by colleagues, friends, club mates, etc. He chooses the former. From that moment, on, he would be forgotten by the world and regarded as mere deja-vu by some. What a tough knot. Honestly, going into depth with the nature of MIB and how it requires no contact with members outside the agency deals with serious social deprivation for some members and really introduces an interesting element to the characters. It adds a sense of mystery to the agents and their backgrounds, and their names for that matter, which are simply abbreviated as the first letters of their first names. You feel sorry for K as he watches on a loved one he can never be with, especially upon J's comment, "Better to love and not be loved back than to never love at all". Also, loyalty between the Agents themselves and their bonds between each other changing throughout the motion picture make the character development even stronger.
Story: 6.5/10
This movie has its perks, but like all, it has its downs, too. There's a reason blockbusters are called blockbusters - they are the movies that make a bunch of money for the thrilling action and visual effects, yet hardly any complicated plots or background stories. This film's idea of busting the aliens and saving the world from extraterrestrial beings is very 'cliche', one could point out. However, what saved this movie's category from receiving a failing score was its added originality mostly explained in the character development section. The fact that the required being hidden from society element in joining the MIB force brought up the story's over-used base to a 6.5, and I give it credit for that. The characters were taken seriously, and characters affect the plot greatly, so an above 5 rank for this category is appropriate.
Overall: 7.5/10
And that's about it for my first movie review! Please let me know what you think; I'm always open for fair judgement, and feel free to leave a comment about your opinion on the movie itself and/or whether or not you disagree with the points I've made in this thread. As always, thank you for reading, and I look forward to hearing from you, everyone! NintendoFanKimmy, over and out!
