So we've all had that friend could play guitar. The guy who could impress anyone, and improvise music and play songs. Almost everyone wants to be like that. And my guide will help you achieve that and more.

First I want to go over some things:
(1) If you'd like advice and I'm not on Vizzed contact me on skype as italianpierogi.
(2) You can always send me a PM about needing help or whether I wasn't specific enough or something among those lines.
(3) For my guitar lessons I'm going to start with Standard tuning (EADGBE), then I'll go to the Alternate tunings like Drop D, Drop C, Bb, and then I'll lastly teach you the Open Tunings.

Lets begin with the things you'll need for this:
(1) A guitar, electric or acoustic, preferably six-string, if you have a twelve, eight or seven string guitar I'll probably go over the information for them in Drop D and Bb.
(2) A electric tuner. A tuner is much more reliable then wasting potential practice time spending hours on the internet looking up how to tune by ear. The most expensive one I found was a $15 one, so it isn't too costly.
(3) Guitar picks. Unless you want to finger pick, which I do not recommend I will advise you get five. Picks usually cost 30 cents, so you can get plenty.

Now that we've covered what you need I'll start with my guide.

I'm going to tell you this now, no one starts off perfect, it took me two weeks for me to figure out how to hold the guitar correctly when I was eight. Any musical instrument is a challenge at first. Soon it'll become a second language, a second love, and a second instinct. Once you have the three things I have listed that you may need you should practice holding the pick. Regardless of what hand you are (I'm personally left-handed but I play right-handed because it's cheaper for a right handed guitar), you use your thumb, and your index finger, those are the only two you'll want to use. If you use your middle finger you can get a stronger strum, but might lose your rhythm while doing it. After you learn to grip the pick right, we'll discuss how to hold the guitar properly.

RIGHT HANDED: I recommend you place the guitar on your right upper thigh. You'll want the guitar to be against your chest, and for when you strum you want your elbow on parallel to the bottom of the guitar (So place it on the top of the body) /

LEFT HANDED:For left handed I'm going to say you should put it on you're upper left thigh and hold the neck upwards. You'll want to place you're left elbow adjacent to the bottom of the guitar.

That's all, check for my next guide for notation!

I learned to play without a pic first. As for guitar placement you will find a natural comfort point. I mostly play a Gibson and they are pretty automatic in sliding to their favoured sitting position.
Equally, if someone is planning on learning guitar, they are best starting with nylon strings since they have no calluses and steel really cuts in.
Additionally, I wouldn't worry too much about alternate tuning until the basics are down, it causes unnecessary confusion. The easiest way to start is with simple scales, such as g major. They use only 3 positions a string, it builds rhythm, and it gives a chance to build your fingers up.

BluemageKyle :
I have played guitar for years.
Both righty and lefty.
(I am a left handed player but I have played the right upsidedown before I got a traditional lefty.)
If you have trouble with a particular student or have a hard time articulating a solution just message my "Character Page". I'll eventually chime in (I try to on the weekends. Busy schedule and all.).

Keep me posted on this page I love music and I would love to assist in any way.

Teaching is a Grand task that I am envious of any one who dares step up to it.

Good Luck.
Peace.

P.S. You have my Respect.
Not the common type.
An elevated form of it.

orionfoxgibson : What people don't understand is teaching ANYTHING gives you and the persons learning a empowering feeling. This'll be a challenge because of my age, but I can do this. I remember when I first was able to play my first song on guitar I wanted everyone to feel this feeling of knowledge, of resolve, of dedication and satisfaction. When one learns to read music or play any instrument a whole window of opportunity opens up.

There are some good online/ phone app tuners out there if there's no budget for an actual tuner. Don't forget the good ol' capo and a hard guitar case, never sacrifice the case when doing some cost cutting and buy the ones that could offer more effective protection. Lastly, if you need help with something that concerns music, you can always contact me. I'm not that knowledgeable about guitars though... you know what instruments I actually play, but maybe I could still help with music basics or theories.

I'm going to close this for the moment because you only JUST sent me your application and it hasn't even been reviewed or accepted.  LOL I'll look at it a little later today though.

I've opened this back up so that you may continue your lessons.  Thanks for being interested in teaching us guitar!

A few quick notes:
-Your picture was way too large, so I shrunk it for you
-Also, since you did not take that photo, you need to cite the website it came from.  Thank you.
-Just post your second lesson, and any other lesson here in this thread, so the forum can remain as clean as possible.    It's easier for the forum owners and also students wishing to learn to learn to play guitar.

Now... I have questions.  XD
I've always wanted to play guitar.  I can't afford one, but some day.. I'd adore it.
I see you've told us how to hold the guitar, but what about our fingers?  Where should they be at rest? Also, how far along the neck of the guitar should our hands be at rest?

Singelli : To buy one you can always go to the guitar store near you, and since you live 45 minutes from me, on 280 actually, there are two music stores, Art's music, and Bailey Brother's Company. I have only been to Bailey Brother's and they get you a good deal, if you have any musical instrument you can trade it in for about $300 in nearly any condition, ask them for a beginner guitar for either acoustic or electric. In my next lesson that I'm writing tonight, will include the hand placement on the neck of the guitar.

I really like this guide! I look forward to seeing more lessons, as I am very interested in learning different songs for the guitar, mainly rock songs.
