First, you don't 'need' someone anyway.  Our lives are nicely complimented by others.  But a relationship is not necessary for a fun life.  I also suggest a rock would be a little unhappy with the willy-nilly lifestyle and way you approach things.  They want someone close to them, grounded in reality, with a firm grasp of what they want and who they are.  If you have that, good.  If not, that's fine too.

Either way, you don't define yourself by your relationship.  And if you do, find people you have fun with.  Don't define things, just have some fun.

And if you want a true 'rock' and a perfect friend, a perfect relationship to define you and give you fulfillment, get a dog.

leggy - it is true what she said though. My wife and I are VERY different. We share some interests obviously or we would never spend time together but we are different people at the core. I also agree that dating your female equivalent would be boring. Guy friends are for doing the things that you really want to do.

I don't normally disagree with opposites attract, but if I think about what my opposite is, I'm not at all interested in being with them.

My opposite would be
-Overly Optimistic (to counter my over pessimism)
-A snobby intellectual who actually cares about the world around them
-Boring to be around
-Too warm and trusting

Those are all traits that absolutely piss me off, I couldn't possibly be with someone like that. They would just be intolerable to be around.
