I personally like to find a nice big flat space. I then clear the grass, so it's completely flat. A big plus, but not necessarily a requirement, is a natural wall. That will always be towards the back of the house.

I'm playing the demo version right now and I'm currently on the surface with a birch wooden door, oak fences and a birch wooden fence gate in a plains biome next to a forest. I like building in a desert the most, if it's next to a forest biome in survival, I'll definitely build in a desert! It gets rid of the rain problem! I also need a Taiga biome for snow farming, your inventory can be full REALLY FAST with a snow golem xD

For a while I was an underground builder, having just one room above ground and a labyrinth of rooms below ground. But lately I've been making my structures above ground entirely. I usually try to find a spot in between three biomes so I have easier access to more resources.

I always build on the surface sense it's a lot easier then digging underground or building up to the sky. I tried building underground once but it's annoying having to dig away the whole area. I tried sky once but it's always a pain to swim up the water flow I have going from the base to the ground. So yeah, I'm your average surface builder .

I dont know why, but i seem to burrow underground to make my homes. Although it may not be fancy, like something above ground, but to be honest, you dont have to gather resources to build up a home. You just dig away, clearing out however big you want your place to be. And you dont have to worry about fine detail till later, after you mine up resources which you probably will run into or make it easier to find a ravine/cave system. So i just find it easier to dig under then build over in my opinion, gives you more of what you want instead of taking out more time to get things, and place them down.
