A pet peeve of mine has really been festering in the recesses of my mind, and I figured that I’d bring up the issue in front of an audience. Anyway, you yourselves are probably all too familiar with the subject that amount to bring up, because it’s pretty much impossible not to have run into it in your daily lives. What am I building up to here? My next topic, of course: grammar.

Now, judging by the topic that I picked last time, you can probably guess that I spend a lot of time looking around the forums at Zetaboards™. While I read the various Pokémon Nuzlocke comics and screen shot runs, I ran into one massive problem, and that is that while some of the authors of these stories can write some pretty interesting and well told stories, I find it difficult to get through them when every third or fourth word is either misspelled, misused, or completely absent.

For example, here’s one that I see all the time. Instead of saying “that tree over there” the author might instead say, “that tree over their”. Not only is that improper use of a homophone, but that gives a bad impression to your audience. Another thing that I’ve noticed is that people commonly seem to misspell words that they could have looked up the proper spelling of, or even something that they simply could’ve corrected in spell check on Microsoft Word. For example, instead of spelling the word “tactful” the author might spell it “tackful”. Not only is this unprofessional from the standpoint of an author, but it just comes off as lazy from the point of view of the audience.

Now, before you guys pelt me with a hailstorm of comments calling me a “grammar Nazi”, let me say two things. One, I can understand some of these grammatical errors if you were not taught English at an early age. I understand that English is difficult to learn even today. Two, this is a very common problem, unfortunately. I have classmates in college who, in all honesty, are very weak in these areas. Even I’m not perfect here. I’m not here to nitpick. I just think it’s annoying to read text in which I have to constantly wonder whether the author even read what they wrote aloud.

With all that said, I would like to reiterate that I have absolutely nothing against any of the authors on Zetaboards™, or really anyone who has problems in these areas. I would just like to ask this: if you’re going to set something off to be viewed by the public, or a teacher, or whoever, could you just take the extra 3 to 10 minutes to proofread your work and check it over a little bit?

I'll counter with this: Your use of commas is killing me.  You use too many and it interrupts the flow of thoughts.   You can cut half of them and your writing will improve.

I also agree with you.  People aren't skilled at written English.  You can blame the terrible rules; it's more challenging then German, Spanish and Japanese.  You can also blame texting for shorthand and a terrible school system.

Languages constantly grow, change, evolve and never remain static.  The use of punctuation and grammar is something that changes with time.  Maybe we're just watching an evolution of a very popular language while it morphs into something more available for the world.

But it bugs me too.  People just don't read enough to see how written English should be done.

Kind of hard for me to answer. Because I try to do my best at grammar but I do have Autism so sometimes I still mess up. However, I try to be professional and proofread my work. I also have somebody else to proofread my work. On the other hand, as I stated I am not good with grammar. What drives me crazy is that I have seen younger students try to write in texting style. That is very unprofessional in my opinion while trying to write reports or papers.

Well, I'll be the first to admit that my punctuation is rough at best, but I do have good grammar at least. And yes, this is a problem with many written articles that you find online. It seems that "Than" and "Then" are two of the most frequently confused words in written English, though I haven't a clue as to why. To me they don't sound similar, but still, I suppose I have a few words that give me trouble, so I can't judge.

What does annoy me though, is when people intentionally misspell words in ways that make no sense, "liek" is a prime example of this, as well as "noe" instead of "Know", and "yoo" instead of "You". Also annoying is seeing people use numbers in place of letters, if y0u kn0w wh4t I m3an.

Still, I have intentionally misspelled words before, but only in conversation, and as a means of communicating that the word was actually being pronounced as written, rather than it's proper form, such as "Sammich". I even use proper grammar in my text messaging. Criminal, I know.

In short, poor grammar in an article does make it difficult to read, but if it isn't too extreme, I can bear it. Also something to take into consideration is the author's age. I think it should be avoided, and proofreading is a must. You should always proofread at least once.

Man, that was way too long. Anyway, yes, grammar like that is annoying. Like Eirinn said, I have problems with "than" and "then", and "their" and "there". Most things I read don't have many mistakes but I hate hacks with bad grammar. Just imagine playing a game and the game says, "an chicken". I mean, "an", "a" and "the" are the most basic of things to learn about English. How could you misuse that?

(And one more problem, my sentence structure is a bit mangled but understandable. Sometimes you can't form the perfect sentence, you know?)

There is nothing wrong with being a grammar Nazi sometimes. I know that there are learning disabilities that often make it hard for people to always get it right, and I make allowances for them when they are clearly putting in the effort... but there are also individuals who use such a condition or just general laziness as a crutch. "Oh, I am dyslexic, I won't bother," is something that I have honestly heard from someone. It infuriated me because at the same time, I had another friend with the same condition that did everything he could to make sure his writing was still correct.

I had trouble with "there, their, they're" when I was little. My teachers had me do flashcard drills and learn context to know when to use each of them. It isn't easy, but it is more than doable.

Also, pet peeve as a writer, but if you are posting up stories for people to read then for the love of all things sacred, have someone edit the darn thing first! It doesn't have to be professional quality work, but having someone other than you read the story can make sure that typos or errors are spotted BEFORE you post that thing for all to read.

On the internet perhaps, but its normally not a massive problem.

You can, for the most part understand what is being said.
Observe:

I don't know if I'll get away with this one, but its funny so I'm putting it out there anyway

If you're talking about articles, I do see how grammar makes a difference.

However, I always thought about posts as a means of writing verbal communication. So I don't mind colloquial speak. In fact, it's so much easier to read informal, relaxed text.

It's really about getting your point across in the easiest way. If it's informal, fine.

thenumberone : That sure got me

EideticMemory : Loving the definition of posting man. Honestly, what makes posts and chats special is their conversational tone.

Yes, while it can be annoying to read things from people who type worse than a dolan meme, at least it shows they're speaking honestly. And not typing out some memorized, robotic statement.

also

thenumberone : dude that was easily the greatest way to get your point across. 10 awesome points to you sir.

I'll pretty much piggyback on what many have said here, numberone makes an awesome point.

Grammar itself is used to remove ambiguity from language, that's it's purpose. "we're going somewhere" means something different than "were going somewhere". If I know what you're saying, I don't usually take the time out to point out your grammar mistakes.

However, if you are factually incorrect about something, that's worth correcting. I'm much more worried about people being factually correct than grammatically incorrect. Though incorrect grammar is annoying sometimes, you can't stop language from evolving.

It surprises me how many people write up something that may or may not be a cool concept or story and expect to be taken seriously, but don't take the time to edit or reread. I have decent grammar and I expect decent grammar of anyone middle school aged and beyond. Some people are naturally good at it and some people struggle, but those who struggle can become good at it by trial and error and by being conscientious of the issues, double checking their work, and using spellcheck to clear up the rest. People who can't write coherent thoughts, spell correctly, or have really inconsistent writing tendencies give me the impression that they're either lazy, unintelligent, or young, all characteristics of a person who probably wouldn't write something I'd be interested in. I think lacking grammar is definitely depreciating and harms your reputation as a serious writer.

This shouldn't need saying, but since there are crybabies: I don't think everyone who doesn't use grammar properly is stupid or not worthy of having their things read. It's just difficult to follow someone when they make blab on and on without any sort of punctuation with spelling errors running rampant and ideas not being explained. Obviously there are learning disabilities and things as others have stated, but in general, it's usually things that can be caught before time or improved over time.

warmaker : I'm surprised you said that, I was impressed that he used commas correctly. Not a lot of people on forums and the like separate sentences properly. It was nice to see.

I almost always use grammar, unless the messages are probably not permanent (for example, on a chat box), or if I'm imitating somebody retarded on the internet.

If I'm writing a personal note to myself, I use improper grammar for the humour of reading it later.

Either way grammatical errors are annoying to 'have' to notice.

The way I see it, grammar is like a "first impression". When you first meet a person, you will notice certain things and that is how you tell what kind of person you are dealing with. It's the same way with grammar. If you notice someone is using really bad grammar, that will come to define the person who wrote it. At least, that's what happens when I read something with bad grammar.

I don't care. It is your language and not mine. But I have to admit it is ridiculous to see people on the internet who have worse spelling and grammar than I do and they supposedly speak it as their first language unlike me. Especially if it is crap like HUR IN AMURICA V SPEAK AMERICN. LOL!LRN IT OR GOAWAY!

Not here ofcource.

I always do my absolute best to make sure my grammar is correct and is as good as possible. Whenever I am writing an essay for English or for any of my classes, whether it is typed or handwritten, I always get someone to look and read it over so they can catch any mistakes before I turn it in, because it will most likely count against me. One thing that drives me crazy is people that talk like this: LOL YOLO SWAG BBQ BRB TTYL OR NAW? It is bad enough that some people text like that or even talk like that, but it drives me nuts when it is on paper....why waste paper?

Everything else I would normally have to say has been covered already. Sometimes I might not be 100% when it comes to punctuation, but I always make sure my grammar is correct.

I try to have proper grammar at all times. Sure, we shouldn't use formal English at all times. But basic grammar and punctuation makes things easier to read. And once you're accustomed to it, it becomes hard and almost painful when there are lots of mistakes present. A misspelled word every now and then, or maybe a few misplaced commas is forgivable. But the more mistakes, the less credibility the piece has at the end.

I used to have trouble with "There, they're, and their" but what happened was, I learned the proper usage of each word. That is the main problem, people don't listen when told the right usage of each symbol or word. Whether it's age, laziness, or whatever. We can't be sure of the entire problem. But it's still a problem when people don't even try.
