Sony Just Unveiled their new slim PS3 which will be available in stores from September 1 2009 at $299US which comes stock with a 120gb HD. Sony will reduce their previous 80gb consoles price to $299US aswell. The internals of the PS3 slim have been completely redesigned, cutting power input and size to two-thirds with added reduction of fan noise.

"PS3 system software update version 3.00
Concurrently with the release of new PS3, system software will be upgraded to version 3.00 on September 1. The update adds various user-friendly features such as the "What’s New" screen, where users can quickly browse the new items available in PlayStation Store as well as their recently played games directly on the XMB (XrossMediaBar), with short cuts to each piece of content. PS3 will evolve continuously with the system software updates, further improving the operability and enhancing the user experience available through the network. PS3 owners will be able to enjoy new features by simply updating the PS3 system software to version 3.00 via the "System Update" function on the XMB.

BRAVIA Sync Feature
The new PS3 system is also equipped with the BRAVIA Sync feature. By connecting the new PS3 system and a BRAVIA TV with the HDMI cable, users are able to directly operate the XMB on PS3 using the TV remote control. Other functions include "System Standby" that will automatically turn off the PS3 system when the BRAVIA TV is turned off.

"Vertical Stand" for new PS3 (CECH-2000 series)
By utilizing the separately sold "Vertical Stand", users will be able to set the new PS3 in vertical position, making it easier to place the PS3 system anywhere at home. The vertical stand will become available in Japan on September 3, 2009, at a RRP of 2,000 yen (including tax) and in North America at US$24.

Removal of "Install Other OS" feature
The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system. "

Is this one backward compatible with PS2 games? I'm also sorta waiting for them to release a PS3 model which is backward compatible. I heard there might be a firmware update to all PS3 models this winter which would make all PS3 systems backward compatible with PS2 but not sure whether that rumor was accurate or not.

Well, if they did have a firmware update, it would probably be a PS2 emulator, which would take up a good 7 or so gb of space.

I don't think it'd take up that much space but if for some reason it did, it'd be worth it.

Well, the Xbox emulator in the 360 takes up about 7gb, so the PS2 emulator would be about the same.

7 GB doesn't sound right, do you have source to back that up? I'm not calling you a liar but that just sounds a little crazy.

EDIT: I just went to the microsoft website and saw that it's only 2.5 MB for the backward compatibility update

What the heck? Once I had to reformat my bro's HDD. He had 13gb on it. I googled why it was so. They said that it was because of the emulator. That's very strange...

Yeah, as Garth said, no backwards compatibility.
Its not that it could have it with the right firmware update, its that they removed the hardware capability for it in the slimming down process.
Or so what I have read about the tech specs says.
Also you guys are lucky, no word at all on a price drop for us poor Aussie bastards that I've seen, and we pay like double what you do on PS3's
I'm still waiting to hear what the flaws are, like how the PS2 Slim was flawed compared to the original PS2.
I guess we'll find out on Sep 2nd...

This is great now that the prices will drop, are they actually out yet????
Because I haven't seen these in Aus yet.

No, not out yet in Australia yet. September 3rd if you believe EB and Game.
And unfortunatly the price drop is only varified for American PS3s as far as I know, so no price drop on the standard model PS3 here.

Uh, it looks like an old system from the 80s. :/ I'll just buy the original when the price goes down to $300.

And if it isn't backward compatible, than I'll just wait until whatever model is backward compatible becomes affordable.

When a system is no longer backwards compatible, I kinda don't want anything to do with it.

I'll just get the "old" PS3 and play my PS2 games on it when I feel like playing them. Looks like Sony is struggling lately. Their products seem like desperate attempts to get money.

I totally agree with you here and it seemed like it was the same way with them at E3.

Don't get me wrong, I love Sony but it just looks bleak for them. Final Fantasy XIV will probably save them from this slump.

But seeing how FF13 will also be on Xbox 360, FF14 may also. FF14 doesn't impress me though, I hate that they're making another online game.
