This is just a short story I wrote when I was bored. Disclaimer: Not exactly my best work, but it's okay, I guess. I usually don't write short original fiction. This seems more like the end of a story, in any case, but this is all there is, at least for now.
Okay. Tell me what you think!
***
Her eyes dropped and so did her tears, too ashamed to meet his eyes. “I’m afraid,” she said, voice soft enough that it could be dissolved by the slightest breeze.
His stomach dropped, plunging down into the center of the Earth; his heart as heavy as if he were the one to be sacrificing himself, and he slipped his hand protectively into hers. “You don’t have to do this,” he said, to reassure himself almost as much as her.
“That’s sweet,” she said with a small, resigned smile, “But you know it’s not true.”
He didn’t know quite what to say to that, because although he was in denial, he had to admit somewhere deep down that she was right, so he just stared at her, trying to memorize every detail of her bright red hair, her forest green eyes, her gentle smile, the feeling of her hand so delicate in his.
They stood like that for a moment, silently fighting with their parallel thoughts and emotions, until her voice cut in again, so devoid of its usual confidence, eagerness, and determination, which had at a better time been as fiery as her hair.
“Sam… I-I…” her voice faded, uncertainly.
“What?” he asked quietly.
“I don’t want to go!” she cried, voice breaking, “There- There was so much I wanted to do, so much I wanted to become! I wanted to help the world in so many ways, but now it’s too late. I-I’ve failed.”
He cupped her face in his hands, tilting it up so their eyes met once again, her green with his blue, an ocean of feelings swimming between them.
“No,” he said firmly, “I let you get away with so much this last year, Amber, agreed to go along with all of your crazy, brilliant plans, but I refuse to let you, even for a moment, believe that you’ve in any way failed.”
She cocked her head quizzically, the way that he’d always loved, “What makes you so sure?”
He shook his head in disbelief. “After all this time,” he sighed in exasperation, “Can you ever just be proud of yourself?! See, that’s the thing about you, Amber. You are so understanding when it comes to other people’s mistakes, but with you, even in success, you always want more! Can’t you see?! You’re becoming the definition of heroism, sacrificing yourself to save the world, and all you can think of is how it’s still not enough because you always feel that you need to save everyone!”
She broke, and fell to her knees. “She died, Sam! She was my sister, my best friend, and she died and it’s all my fault!”
“No,” he said, “You did all you could. Jess wouldn’t want you to blame yourself.”
“She was fourteen!” she yelled, “She was my little sister! It was my job to protect her, not the other way around!”
“It was her choice to make,” he said, although he was unable to mask his own sadness when he too remembered the arrow sprouting from the young girl’s chest.
“And what about the ones who destroyed the three smaller crystals?!” Amber pointed out, “Look how much we’ve lost in this stupid, ridiculous war!”
“You know it was the only way,” Sam reminded her,
“I always knew it’d take four of us to destroy them all…” she whispered, “But why couldn’t it just have been somebody else? I-I- there’s so much evil magic in the world, but we just had to lose my father and two of my best friends!”
Sam knew the thought should have depressed him, but instead suddenly his eyes lit up with the first hope he’d felt in weeks. “Wait… suppose…”
“Suppose what?” she asked, eyes narrowing suspiciously.
“You aren’t exactly the last of your kind, you know-”
“Sam,” she muttered, looking away again, “We’ve been through this! The others don’t have nearly enough magic to break the fourth crystal. It always had to be me. Only my soul is tied to it.”
“No,” he said triumphantly, “You’re wrong! There is one other hope!”
Her eyes widened as she realized what he was suggesting. “No… Sam…”
“But it’s true!” he argued, “The only reason King Jarthix can be defeated by the destruction of the crystal is because he too is tied to it, right? So if we only-”
“I’m tied to it too!” she argued, “No matter who destroys it we both go down!”
“No,” he said with a grin. “Not if you resign your magic first!”
“The crystal requires a willing sacrifice,” she pointed out, furiously. “That’s impossible! And besides, I can’t resign my magic unless one of my blood relatives is killed on it!”
“No… No. I’ll make Jarthix sacrifice himself! Don’t you see? It all works out! Everyone knows he has a weak spot for your brother. So-”
“Not that big of a weak-spot! And there is no way you’re killing Thomas just to spare me!” snapped Amber.
“Aw, come on Amber!” he yelled back, “He betrayed you! I won’t lose you again!”
They both fell silent for a long time, staring each-other stubbornly in the eyes; painfully aware that every second wasted meant more lives lost to the war, until finally Amber softened.
“Fine,” she muttered, reluctantly.
Sam let out a thankful sigh, relieved almost beyond words. “I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you too,” she said back, but wouldn’t meet his eyes.
He ran down the hill through the battle, dodging the endless soldiers with clashing swords, getting closer and closer with every moment to the king and his most loyal followers.
“Oh Sam...” she whispered darkly, watching him go, with a small, bitter laugh, “You know I’ve never let you win an argument…”
Amber looked away, and squeezed her eyes shut as she extended her arm, clenching her fingers slowly into a tight fist to gently use her magic to put him to sleep. She hoped desperately that he would look dead enough on the battlefield like that that he wouldn’t get beheaded while he was out cold.
Then she extended her arm to the cold, hard crystal, took a deep breath, and dug deep inside herself, straight to her magic’s heart. It always had to be me, didn’t it? She thought, See you soon, Jess.
She cast the entirety of her power out into the crystal…
And fell to the ground, never to breathe again.
The world shook with the magnificent magnitude of the crystal’s explosion, and everybody simultaneously let out a cry, some of shock, some of fear, some of sadness or rage. Jarthix let out a deep, bone-shattering unearthly shriek, and exploded into dark rays of energy, which spread out across the sky and for just a few seconds eclipsed the sun, before all of the rays faded, and the world was freed from his shadow forever.
The people with magic all collapsed to the ground, bodies shocked into unconsciousness by the sudden drainage of energy in their bodies from the powerful magical type they were accustomed to running their body to the lesser, regular sort of energy. They would not wake again for a long time, some of them for many months, depending on the amount of power they used to wield. Some would never be the same again.
However, an incredible cheer spread throughout the realm from all of the non-magical rebels, free to live in peace at last, free from fear and slaughter and all the horrors Jarthix had brought, a sudden release of all of the hope, relief, triumph and love in existence, as all of Jarthix’s followers gulped and gasped and ran for the hills.
Meanwhile, down on the field, Sam blinked open his eyes, and shook his head, running a hand through his dark curly hair before he finally sat up, wincing at the powerful ache in his head, beating against his skull. For a moment he was bewildered by the sudden turn of events, before he turned to see the exploded crystal and felt his heart explode just as surely as he noticed Amber, the small unmoving shape lying bathed in blood amongst the shards.
He let out a loud, mournful cry, which was echoed all throughout the realm as everybody discovered some loved one to mourn. No matter whose side they were on, everyone, even in victory, had in some way lost.
The realm of Aridor was safe… but they had paid the price.
