Collectors are usually working towards a goal of having a complete collection; setting goals for yourself and completing them is rewarding.

Depending on the collection, it could also provide entertainment. I know a lot of people collect movies and video games. For example, I collect masterpiece & classic Disney films on VHS tapes. My sister collects classic rock vinyl records. My husband collects music in general.

People make collections based on personal wants. The wants could literally be anything. A lot of people do it just so that they can have the feeling of accomplishment, others do it for purely sentimental reasons. Personally, I collect video games, but it's only video games that I want to play, I don't just buy games because they're a part of the set. For me, it's about a practical value, and it also looks really aesthetically pleasing, all of the games that I am surrounded by.

Well people make collections because it's fun. Honestly I collect lots of things to keep me entertained. Mainly collections can mean something to the collector and basically keeps us wanting to expand or collection and collect more and more.

If I am into collecting seashells because of their design, then I am going to collect a whole bunch of different types of shell with different designs. That is what makes it fun to do.  Things that they want or have value or meaning to them are typically things they would have an interest in collecting. 

Plus they want to have a complete collection so they are going to collect a whole bunch of it to say they have a complete collection so they can brag about it later. It really gives them a sense of accomplishment to have a complete collection of something.


That is just what I think drives people to get into collecting personally. Good question by the way.

Because at heard we are all crazy hoarders. Collecting stuff is a way we funnel all that energy into something productive, and its just plan fun to collect and organize and obsess over a singe goal of collecting all of one or more things that you can.

People who were raised possibly in  a military family or something amongst those lines would move a lot. So they'd not be able to establish friendships like people who only grew up in one town. So, unable to make friends due to the thought and fear of having to leave that person, they become attached to items.

I think some of us are just addicting to collecting things. Maybe not to the degree a horder is or something, but I know people that spend fortunes on collections that just sit there and are never used, but they love having it. I know I have been guilty of that with some of my trading card collections.

Usually when I collect things it has a lot of value and worth to me! I don't collect a lot but I'm like most people when I do collect.. I COLLECT if you know what I mean. It is something you can brag about but.. that is not something I like to do.

They most likely do it just because it is in their interest and they want to have a complete collection of something. Also, going along with what bintsy said, they want to collect things that have self worth and value to them. Some do it for fun and others do it just to say that they have a complete collection and be able to brag about it. I am pretty thorough when I collect something though, but I am not going to sell an arm and a leg to get something. But I collect video games, cool rocks, seashells and other miscellaneous things. But I do it because I enjoy those things and strive for a complete collection of them. This is all going off of what I said before in my last post.

I collect baseball cards, which I really like, but the main point of my collections is to increase the value so I could sell them when I'm older and make millions upon millions of dollars, and then I would start the entire thing over again.

I see people make collections for two reasons. One is for sentimental value, since the objects in question have some personal value to the collector, like old baseball cards. Second is for having a hobby. Collecting stamps or rocks may keep someone busy for hours.
