So yeah.... pretty obvious thread title. What do you do for work?

Are you doing what you thought you would be doing? If not what would your ideal job be?

Right now I'm on hard times.  I'm currently collecting unemployment after a six year stint at Wendy's, but I only got 3 checks left.  I give plasma for some cash and am currently putting in applications like crazy.  My realistic dream job would be to sell houses at my father's company.

I write. I write for new papers, a couple of times I have helped contribute to Cracked.com  and also have made a few bucks off of those cheep romance novels.  Its a horrible underpaid living and I often find myself scraping by but dammit I love it!

I sweep floors, troubleshoot crashing computers, wear paths into floors, fight teenagers, arbitrate adult arguments, write novels, move walls, feed strange kids, establish laws, test red pens for longevity, file thousands of papers, criticize research, crunch statistics, forecast, provide hugs, attend sporting events, draft legal documents, and maintain 'world' peace for about 400 people a day.

Did I see myself in this position since the age of 6?  Well, not exactly. I saw myself solely as a teacher.

I am a teacher as well.  This is my 9th year of teaching third grade.  Growing up in a family of educators it was always ingrained in my mind that I should go into the education field.  Although at this point, I am a bit burned out of working in the classroom at a high-poverty needy school.  I would love to use my Curriculum and Instruction Masters degree and work for a textbook company or create curriculum materials for a school district.  A desk job working at a computer most of the day is were I'd probably rather be.

Namrea :   You have my dream job!  I always wanted to be a writer and wrote my first (still unpublished) book at age 13.  The low pay and lack of benefits is what made me realize it's not a realistic job for me   I wish it was though!  Although I see ways now to get things published (like on Amazon) that are fairly inexpensive.  I just wish I had more energy to pursue it in my spare time.  Song-writing has also become quite a passion of mine, but my day job eats up so much of my time and energy.  That's so cool that you have been able to make a living in the writing field-I'm jealous

fightorace :  I'm always sorry to hear about people struggling in this economy today.  Things shouldn't be like this for people who want to work (and hopefully conditions will improve under our next president-sorry had to throw my two cents in there)!  I really hope your father can let you work at his company.  Maybe he has some temp work you can do for now to get you started

kramer4077 : That was how I started.  I began self publishing myself.  Cause when your lucky enough to have someone buy something, you get a percentage of it in most cases.  I did it when I when I was 15 and just never stopped trying.  Though now its a bit easier, I do have a fast food job backing up my income but I honestly hate admitting it..I feel as though its simply there as necessity and not my real job.

fightorace : have you asked for a job? Maybe he assumes you don't want a handout? It's hard to know with some people. Or maybe he's barely making do with the people he's got? I really don't know. It's not like the housing market is strong right now.

I work in warehouses.
I wish I worked at Airports and Travelled more.
Not much to say on that but the crazy way the government put restraints on the Air Freight Jobs that kills anothers dreams too quickly.
....
2001.
And Right when I was becoming a decent man too.
Good Luck.
Peace.

I'm a QA Manager at a food manufacturing plant.  Lots and lots of admin.  That's why I'm in front of my PC almost the whole day.

Namrea :
That is awesome! I love cracked.com.
Myself I have been doing various kinds of odd  jobs and that has included journalism a bit too, though I have no interest in writing. I wrote a few articles when I was asked to and got paid for it and it was an nice experience but haven't really missed it afterwards enough to pursue it more.

I'm in the Michigan National Guard.  I joined the Army right after high school.  I was Active Duty for five and a half years.  I got out for two years and joined the National Guard at that time.  In December, I have been with the Guard for three years.
