Final Fantasy XIV. I've spent so much time playing it. You can't go wrong with Team Fortress 2, or Warframe. Warframe is basically Mass Effect 3's multiplayer with 200% more space ninjas.

Neverwinter is a great mmo, it was finally added to steam a while ago.  You can create your own quests in "The Forge" when you reach level 15 with any character, and it has a nice real-time combat system (instead of just watching an auto-attack the whole time you can use different attacks with different mouse clicks).

Another one that I got really addicted to for a while is Champions Online.  When you get to level 25 you can create your own nemesis (I'm at level 22 right now if I remember right).  It's really good if you like super heroes (although it does have an auto-attack, unlike DC universe online, but I enjoy Champions online more, it has way more character customization).

It really depends what type of games you enjoy.

If you enjoy shooters then Team Fortress 2 is the right choice for you and shad0wtraverse summed it up pretty well.

If you enjoy strategy games then you should have fun with League of Legends. 

The best free racing game in my opinion is TrackMania. You could say that this game is only a demo but you can still play online and make and race on custom course, the only difference between the standard and the premium version is the fact that you can make different styles of racetracks.

I am a fan of Call of Duty: Ghosts but only the "Extinction" part of online. The multiplayer is just not for me on that one. I will stick to my Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 as long as I can. You can play Minecraft online, totally free. If you like it, you can download the cracked version (tell me if you can't find one and I'll help you). I would also recommend WoW. I play the free version, myself, and it's awesome. I've played from 10 pm to dawn with friends on multiple occasions. I'm surprised these two weren't mentioned already.

Bloons tower defence is kind of new and is pretty good. I don't think it's really online, but it's a very good tower defence game. There are much other games over out there, but there's always Google.. :p

I suggest you try Pokemon Tower Defense 1 or 2. Both of them are fantastic, addicting games, and you will not regret playing them. Trust me, they are spectacular! I love them ^^!
