There is one other game that I used to love to play that was made by Atari
ages ago, it was a really cutting edge game for it's time, and I'm not talking about Asteroids.

It's called Gravitar.

The game put you in a 4 planet solar system and the objective was to destroy all enemy bases
on each planet. You controlled your ship just like you would in Asteriods, you could also use a shield.

thrusting, shielding and using you tractor beam (more on the tractor beam later) would eat fuel
from you fuel reserves, so you had to watch your fuel in the game. If you need fuel, you could get it in 2 ways.

1 use you tractor beam while flying over a fuel cell on any given planet

2 destroy all bunkers on a planet, thus completing the level

To get to planets, you would have to travel through space on a map like this:

Gravitar (version 3) - Level <z>S</z>elect - - User Screenshot

Other star ships will spawn on the map and try to shoot, or touch you.
While you can shoot them right there and now, if you touch them, the screen will zoom in
and you will be locked in a battle with the enemy. If you get locked in a battle, you can shoot farther
at each other which is kinda nice.

If you reach a planet, you will be taken to a map like this:

Gravitar (version 3) - Level - - User Screenshot

Or this:

Gravitar (version 3) - Level - - User Screenshot

To complete the level, take out all of the red bunkers stationed on the planet.

I don't know if there's anything else in the game beyond the first solar system.
It's really hard, but so much fun. I used to play it all the time. I wish that the game had
more popularity, it was really cutting edge back in the day. To me, it will always be a classic.

If you want to try it you can play it right here:

Play Gravitar (version 3) rom Game Online - Arcade free mame - Vizzed

Have any of you already played this game?

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

I haven't played it, probably won't as my time is still kinda limited.

Depends on what you mean by Star Fox like. What aspects of a game would make it similar to Star Fox?

I'll have to try that when I get to a pc sometime. Thanks for telling me about it, it sounds cool.

As for Star Fox like games, I can suggest Rebel Raiders: Operation Nighthawk, but it's a PS2 game, and so, not on Vizzed, obviously. The gameplay is somewhat similar to Star Fox, but I'd say it's more of blend of Star Fox type game play and a more realistic ariel combat game (like maybe Aero Fighters, though I can't remember much about that one, so that may be a bad example). In the game you can fly various air crafts, each of which has an invisible shield surrounding it, as well as a special weapon (smart missles, "shotgun", etc.), and you usually have a team flying with you.

That's about the best description I can give (haven't played it in over two years).

EDIT: Screenshots and such didn't work

That looks cool. Uncertain of the Star Fox aspects like sonikku mentioned but part of me think I get what you're talking about. I've played very few Atari games and only own a few myself. So i'll probably give this a try at some point.

It could be like Star Fox in any way.
If you fly a ship and shoot stuff then it counts in my opinion.

This game is a lot more like Star Fox 2 beta.
Same general idea. The PS2 game sounds pretty neat actually.

I'd say the Ratchet and Clank series, but only because you do fly a ship from planet to planet. It uses more ground combat than space combat (and in fact has no space combat until later games in the series, though I've only played up to Deadlocked in the series), but is quite an enjoyable series.

One Star Fox like game I really enjoy is Skygunner on the ps2.  It's gameplay is similar to Star Fox, but it's more anime styled.
