I used to do that I lot, but somehow, I've managed to control it. I still do it sometimes, but it's very rare and usually I can stop myself from doing so before I actually do it.
When I'm nervous though, I can't exactly control that and then I do it. Luckily for me, I don't get nervous so easily, so that doesn't happen a lot.
But there's some "weird times" where I catch myself biting my nails and I'm like: "Dammit!"

sop281 : Well, if you're just chilling at home during the summer, you could put a piece of tape over each fingernail.

The taste of the tape would remind you of what you're doing and make you stop. Just keep replacing the tape daily until you kick the habit.

Obviously easier said than done, but if you're desperate... who knows?

EideticMemory : I would be willing to try that, if my post still applied. I have been trying to simply will myself to stop the habit, and it has been working for a while now. I am honestly surprised that I would be able to do something of that nature, without having to use any other methods. Normally, I am pretty limited in willpower, so this did come as a huge surprise to me. Thanks anyway though. :3

Though my mother made it difficult for me to break this habit. Due to her always clipping our nails, and seeing the way she clipped hers....I can't even stand a little bit of white showing, like most people have. I tend to clip them or (more often) bite them off all the way down to my finger.

I've heard if you constantly bite your nails for years and years, your fingernails could become severely deformed. That hurts just thinking about it. I've also heard if you actually bite off your nail from chewing on it and then swallow it, you could develop stomach problems. My wife helped me to finally stop doing it when I was still in college. She said "I have a simple solution for that. Clear nail polish." If you have this nasty habit, simply put nail polish on your fingers. Trust me, you'll stop after that.
