I used to do that I lot, but somehow, I've managed to control it. I still do it sometimes, but it's very rare and usually I can stop myself from doing so before I actually do it.
When I'm nervous though, I can't exactly control that and then I do it. Luckily for me, I don't get nervous so easily, so that doesn't happen a lot.
But there's some "weird times" where I catch myself biting my nails and I'm like: "Dammit!"

sop281 : Well, if you're just chilling at home during the summer, you could put a piece of tape over each fingernail.

The taste of the tape would remind you of what you're doing and make you stop. Just keep replacing the tape daily until you kick the habit.

Obviously easier said than done, but if you're desperate... who knows?

EideticMemory : I would be willing to try that, if my post still applied. I have been trying to simply will myself to stop the habit, and it has been working for a while now. I am honestly surprised that I would be able to do something of that nature, without having to use any other methods. Normally, I am pretty limited in willpower, so this did come as a huge surprise to me. Thanks anyway though. :3

I don't bite my nails. I don't really see how one could actually bite their nails. I have some friends who bite their nails though, and they don't like that they do it, and they claim that it is a really bad habit.

I haven't done that since I was 7.
I used to randomly, but I don't any more. It doesn't help me with stress or anything, and it never did, so I stopped.

Doesn't seem like there's a legitimate reason. All it takes is one random time where you try biting them.

Yes all the time. I have done it for years. Lots of people I know do it so I'm guessing it is down to habit.

my cubits on my finger nails got infected about 3-5 times already. I bite my nails when I get nervous over something, which happens a lot.

I used to bite my nails all the time when I was younger, but I haven't done it in years. I just grew out of it I guess. Plus, I keep my nails really short now, so there's nothing to bite anyway. 

No I used to for a while but not anymore. For some reason I always get an urge to do it though whenever I see something that has to do with it I'm not really sure why since it doesn't exactly feel particularly good.

No, I do not bite my nails. I actually like them pretty long, and be uses biting them makes them shorter, I really stay away from doing that kind of thing to ruin my nails.

Dragonlord Stephi :  My mom tried to make my twin and I stop sucking on our thumbs by using hot sauce. Unfortunately for her, we actually liked it. haha! I gave it up before my twin though, so my mom tried putting socks on her hands while she slept. I don't remember if it worked or not.

This thread makes me feel a little better. I just got done biting my nails yesterday, actually. I think it's just too convenient and besides that... it's just a natural reaction! I was amused the other day to watch my cat trimming his nails by ripping the outer layers off with his teeth. I thought "Oh, is that what I look like?"

Though my mother made it difficult for me to break this habit. Due to her always clipping our nails, and seeing the way she clipped hers....I can't even stand a little bit of white showing, like most people have. I tend to clip them or (more often) bite them off all the way down to my finger.

I usually bite my nails when they're at a decent length, though I have to use scissors when they're too long to bite.

When I was still in school, I used to bite my nails all the time. Now that I've graduated since then, I hardly ever do it anymore, and I'm glad I've stopped. I've heard if you constantly bite your nails for years and years, your fingernails could become severely deformed. That hurts just thinking about it. I've also heard if you actually bite off your nail from chewing on it and then swallow it, you could develop stomach problems. My wife helped me to finally stop doing it when I was still in college. She said "I have a simple solution for that. Clear nail polish." If you have this nasty habit, simply put nail polish on your fingers. Trust me, you'll stop after that.

Hmmm, I never really thought about it. I guess I do. I mean, when I think about it, I usually bite them off when they get to long, since I am too lazy to get up and find my nail clippers. 

When I was 5 I used to do it a lot, it wouldn't be abnormal for be to bite them until I started bleeding, luckily for me, I don't bite my nails anymore.
