Good day fellow Vizzed members.

So as some of you may or might not know the NFL is considering expanding the playoff seeds from 12 to 14 teams. This would mean that only the team with the top seed would get a bye week and the extra wildcard team would play the number 2 team. Here are some examples from the past year if the playoff roster was expanded during those years...

2012: 8-8 Pittsburgh Steelers vs 12-4 New England and 10-6 Chicago vs 10-6 Redskins

2011: 9-7 Tennesse Titans vs 12-4 Baltimore Ravens and 8-8 Chicago vs 13-3 San Francisco 49ers

2010: 9-7 San Diego Chargers vs 12-4 Pittsburgh Steelers and 10-6 New York Giants vs Chicago Bears.

As you can see most of these teams that would be added in the past had winning records (besides the 2012 Steelers where they were .500).

So what is your opinion on this? Should the NFL expand the playoff roster?

This sounds really interesting. Although, I kind of see it the same way I see the MLB wild card playoffs, although this one is probably better. I feel the team with the better record should be the team to go into the playoffs.
Like we saw last year in the MLB, the Braves were six games above the Cardinals, but still, the Cards won in the one game playoff. Now, for Cardinal fans, this was great! But for Braves fans, not so much. As a sports fan in general, I think the team that has the better record should get to move on. There is the other hand, where this means more excitement for the Cardinals, still being in the race, but I still don't think that's the right thing to do.
So, no, I think they should leave it the way it is. The "better" team should get to move on.

Considering that there are 32 teams in the NFL, it would make more sense to expand the playoffs to a sixteen team format to make everything even and do things like the NBA and NHL does now. Teams seeded 1-8 and the division winners get first 4 seeds automatically. That opens up a potential for all 4 teams in a division to get in.

Azul Fria : That would be a good idea as that would increase revenue, but in actuality its a bad move to expand it that much. Given the fact that most teams besides 6-9 teams have losing records (4-12, 5-11, 7-9); it wouldn't make sense to add a sub-500 team into the playoff mix as they are most likely going to get blown out by the top seed.

I hate it anytime someone talks about expanding playoffs or tournaments.  I still can't stand the NCAA tournament field at 68 instead of 64.  I think the playoffs are good where they are at.  4 division winners, 2 wild cards.  It makes the regular season that much more important.  Any time you expand the playoffs, it automatically devalues the regular season a little bit more, because more people get in.  That means teams will clinch playoff berths earlier, and there will be more benching starters, resting players, and more meaningless games at the end of the season.

But the reason the NFL, or any league for that matter, considers playoff expansion, is flat out money.  The extra TV and ticket revenue from more games, equals more money.  So if they can find a way to squeeze out some extra money, they'll do it.  "Quality of the game? Who cares"

In all honesty, I don't think that with the format they have already with 12 teams going on out of 32 that two more teams should advance. It used to be in sports that the top two teams from each league, if there were separate leagues, would move on. Now we have it where a lot of teams get to the postseason.
