The Puerto Rico question

What should be done about Puerto Rico?
Statehood. The people of Puerto Rico have said that they wish to join the United States as the 51st state and they should.

57.1%, 4 votes
Independence. The people of Puerto Rico have different customs, culture, and language then the United States so they should be their own country.

0.0%, 0 vote
Status quo. The people of Puerto Rico have different customs and practices then the United States has, but if we let Puerto Rico declare independence then they could lose funding and become a Third World Country.

42.9%, 3 votes

Good day fellow Vizzed members.

I had totally forgotten about this issue in the United States that has been going on for a while now. As you all may know the United States owns the island of Puerto Rico and its status is subject of much debate (particularly on the island). There has been a growing movement in Puerto Rico and the United States to have Puerto Rico become the 51st state. There is however a fierce effort by Puerto Rican groups to have Puerto Rico declare independence. Recently the Puerto Rican people where asked what they wanted done about their state. Do they wish to continue the way things are (they are a protectorate, but not a state) or do they wish to abandon the status quo. If they wish to abandon the status quo, do they wish to join the United States as the 51st state or become an independent country.

The Puerto Rican people decided that they wish to abandon the status-quo protectorate status by about a 54 to 46 percent vote. When asked if they wish to become a state, remain a territory, or become independent; 60 percent of Puerto Ricans said that they wish to become a state. Most United States presidents have strongly supported Puerto Rico become the 51st state (Gerald Ford, Ronald Regan, George H. W. Bush to name a few). There is even a committee that supervises on Puerto Rico's decision making as to whether they wish to become a state or not.

So folks what do you think should happen? Should Puerto Rico become the 51st state? Should they remain a territory of the United States? Should they become an independent country?

I think Puerto Rico should become a state. Also, where did you get the information that they want to be a state? They have a vote on it and I went there in 2011 and the vote results said that they still wanted to not be a state. However, it was really close, so it could have changed.

Status que or statehood. I'll just vote que on the poll, but I'm for both. They are quite different from the contiguous United States. Also, at the status the US is in right now, Puerto Rico should really wait until the US gets out of their mess. Although, they could become a third world country, and we really don't want those guys to go poor.

The only opinion that truly matters is those who happen to live in the territory in question. To become a state, Puerto Rico would first have to hold an official referendum on the matter(which apparently has been held but I request that goodboy cite where he got the voting results). If approved, they would have to hold a constitutional convention in order to write a state charter/constitution. Then only then will Congress consider the matter and every instance in the past has been accepted or approved.

However, times have changed since the last time a new state was admitted in 1959. With the polarization of our populace and of our Legislative branch, some representatives in Congress may not approve of adding a new State simply because it would mean more voters for the opposing party(its also how some have viewed the whole Immigration debate(sad but true)). Personally I wouldn't care if they became a new state or not, hence I suppose status quo is where I stand right now.

In addition to Puerto Rico, I read in the newspaper today about how a Northern California county has voted to secede from California and to form its own State. Its trying to rally other Northern California counties and some Southern Oregon counties to join them and the main reason behind their push to form their own State is because of forest fire fees and water rights and a lack of representation in Sacramento. With respect to water, they're particularly pissed that their water is going to Central and Southern California because the Colorado River isn't meeting their excessive demands.

DH110985 : Ah yes I heard about that. I believe that those counties are trying to form the state of "Franklin" (after Ben Franklin). They were originally going to announce their plans to succeed around the 1940's; but then the Pearl Harbor attack kind of drew their attention away from that.

Also here is the source for my election results...

The only opinion that matters is that of the puerto rican's.
If they voted yes then, tied as they have been to the usa for so long, you are obligated to concede them their rights.
At any rate, if you refuse they will (rightly so) be p'd off that they have been slapped aside, and that will aid their independence movement, i promise you.
At least this state will have joined democratically unlike the last state that "voted".cough cough.

The Puerto Ricans and other Americans have been saying for a little while now they want to try to get Puerto Rico as the 51st state, but also what I heard that they have to have some talks with Spain, but I think that's just me though.

Well technically Puerto Rico is a providence or territory of the United States, we use the same money resources etc. I even think they can vote( I don't know this for sure). I think Puerto Rico should officially become a state instead of the providence or territory that it currently is. But it's up to the people of Puerto Rico if it wants to officially become a state of the United States. But Puerto Rico joining the United states of America as a state wouldn't change really anything to be honest, since it is a providence or territory of the United States if it ever goes to war it would have our support and it already uses our money & money system.
