Good afternoon fellow Vizzed members (or morning or evening). I'm in a little bit of a pickle in life and I could use some advice on what I should do. Currently I work for a retail store for about a year now making minimum wage. To put my job descr Anyways there is a rumor going around the area where I work that the store is going to be closed around the Holliday times (between Thanksgiving and Christmas). So like most of my employees who decided to look for other work, I did the same thing. Well I got a call back from a rival retail store and they want me to work just collecting carts in the parking lot for .50 cents more. I accepted the position and told them that I need to give 2 weeks notice since I know that my current job will need a So I went into work today, wrote a note to the person who makes schedules to not put me on the schedule after 2 weeks. After doing that I told my manager. She didn't take the news that well. She basically begged me to not leave the store since I do so much work for the store that they will have a hard time finding people who will do as much work as I do. Not to mention with the store rumored to be closing soon, some people might not apply. Once I leave, there will be nobody to work half the store during certain hours of the day/night. She told me to think about staying and I told her I would give her an answer soon. Now I'm in a tough situation. Here is what can happen... A. I stay with my current employer and the store closes. I'm out of a job and nobody will be looking to hire people since once the store goes through liquidation it would be January (around that time). B. I stay with my current employer and the store remains open. I keep my part-time job and work in an area that I'm familiar with and enjoy doing sometimes (usually involving furniture). C. I leave to go to the rival retailer and they fire me after the Holliday season. Again I'm out of a job and not a lot of places will be hiring. D. I leave to go to the rival retailer and they keep me on. I get a job with better pay and less stress. I frankly don't know what to do. Can you guys help me out? stay with current job, it's barely a pay increase on the other place and you aren't familar with anything there yet. Also the money you pay in gas will take away your profits anyways |

Most places will make you work twice as hard as your pay is. And to be honest, there is no way of knowing if the new location will stay less stressful than the current one. You could tell your manager you will only stay on if you get a dollar raise, if not, you will go to the other job. Another thing to keep in mind is that since you run half the store, and you have over a year experience, you may very well get promoted to manager or supervisor or something like that someday. So perhaps you should stick to this job. Do you know if employees do get promotions at your store? It also all depends on how certain are you that you current store will close; what did your manager say when you brought it up? How did she react? Remember, changing jobs means you start from scratch again, you have to build a reputation, show how hard you work, ect... Also, let me ask you this: How long do you want to work in a department store, even working at a promoted level? If this is "just a job" and couldn't care less about promotions, then so be it. But if you think that working as the head of a specific department is your thing, then why not see if you can stay? Light Knight : My manger gave me the same story that she has told everyone else. She doesn't know if the rumors are true, but that if the store does close there is still a three month period where the store has to sell of the assets and inventory. The store doesn't really give out promotions. I could end up becoming an assistant manager, but I'll still make minimum wage and I'll be required to do even more. I had thought about asking my manager for a raise if I stay on, but the store is on a tight budget so a dollar raise might be high. I was thinking more of a 25 cent or if they could match what the rival store is offering me. I don't really view this as just a job, I also view it as a good place to get a workout since I do so much on my feet and lift a lot of stuff. Well, I'm not one to tell you what's important in your life. But if there's no where to go in your job, no way to get a promotion with a raise, then there's nothing really keeping you there... unless you really love it. And 25cents is not much, they should at LEAST give you a 50 cent raise to keep you. And 25cents is not much, they should at LEAST give you a 50 cent raise to keep you. |

Unfortunately, you missed the first opportunity to take advantage of the situation. (There is nothing wrong with taking advantage of the situation in the business world.) When the manger "basically begged", you should have said "well, I'll be making $1.00 more an hour and I'll have less responsibilities but I kind of like it here and I'd be willing to stay..." Then stop talking and wait for her to suggest more money or a promotion. That puts the ball back in her court. Live and learn. The second opportunity is when she follows up with you about the situation. At this point you say "well, I'll be making $1.00 more an hour and I'll have less responsibilities but I kind of like it here and I'd be willing to stay..." DO NOT START THE CONVERSATION! You can hint at it to get the ball rolling but if you start the conversation then you are telling her, without telling her, that you are weak. Let her be the weak one again. The $1.00 thing is haggling, she may say "We could only afford to give you a .50 an hour increase". In that case you got your .50. This whole thing about being on a tight budget is not your problem. It's business. $1.00 an hour is only $40 a week and you gotta live too... If you get an Assistant Manager position and it doesn't pay much, in 6 months or more you can parlay that into a better baying management job, etc. The second opportunity is when she follows up with you about the situation. You are only looking for the second job to fill time in during the break? Or is it a long term gig? Go with which store will allow advancement and training to help you in life. If the new place can train you to do more and give you responsibility and you develop your skill set, go with them. If the current store, where you have a job, is willing to train you to do more than your current employment, stay with them. THe difference of 50 cents and some drive time doesn't matter if you can grow and develop yourself. Tell your current manager you don't feel like you're developing any new skills and you're not growing within the company. If she can offer you an opportunity to learn more and improve, you'd stay. Don't lie about it to worm extra money. The most important thing with early jobs is skill development. Good luck! Go with which store will allow advancement and training to help you in life.
