Thanks for reading my review of Maniac Mansion for Nintendo! --kramer4077

Overall: 10/10--Since I found this website I wanted to review Maniac Mansion!  It is truly an original awesome RPG!  I must have played this for dozens of hours in the 90s as a child trying to beat it.  The first time I turned the game on I even had difficulty opening the front door of the mansion!  But I was probably 8 years old, so cut me some slack  This game takes a lot of strategy to beat and it is so much fun to play!  If you've never played Maniac Mansion...now is the time!!

Graphics: 9/10--This game has very unique graphics.  A very creative cartoon-style mansion and characters are in this game.  You control the game cursor with your NES gamepad.  At times it's a bit tricky to get the cursor to click exactly what you want, but otherwise graphics are cool!

Sound: 10/10--The music is unforgettable and will be stuck in your head for a lifetime!  I could hum Syd's theme song right now if you asked me to.  There are plenty of realistic sound effects and eerie music as well.

Addictiveness:  9/10--I played this game a lot as a child.  I couldn't beat the game then.  Since I know how to beat the game now, I don't play it quite so much, but it is still a favorite of mine!  There are multiple ways to beat this game using different character combinations.  After you beat the game one way, it's fun to try and use different characters and beat the game a in a slightly different way!

Story: 10/10--You begin by choosing your characters in addition to Dave.  Choose wisely because each of the other "kids" has special skills .  To beat the game I recommend getting someone who can fix the phone (Bernard or Jeff) and one of the musicians (Syd or Razor).  There are other combinations of "kids" you can choose to beat the game though.  You then go through the game telling the "kids" what to do and where to move with a cursor.  As a young child I went through the mansion picking up every single item there was, but you mainly need the keys and a few select items to get through the game (can of Pepsi anyone? :-D)

Depth:  10/10--As previously mentioned the "kids" have different skills, so there's more than one way to beat the game.  That is, until you come to the end when you need to go through the same process in order to beat the game.  There is also a seemingly endless amount of items to collect as you go through the house and it's fun to play the game just trying to pick up every item that you can!

Difficulty: 10/10--This game is very difficult to beat.  I never beat it as a child.  I finally beat it when YouTube came out and someone posted a video of how to beat it.  This isn't your typical Mario-style game where you just follow the level until the end.  This game requires you to run through a mansion multiple times using gaming-skills to determine what the next step toward beating the game is.  You need to collect keys that unlock certain doors in a different part of the house, as well as use items from one room in a totally different part of the mansion.  The difficulty will keep you thinking as you make your way through this Nintendo gem!

This review peaked my interest. I guess I've always got Milon's Secret Castle, which is quite terrible, and this game mixed up. I might have to check out what the "kids" have to offer.

Yeah, I'll take a Pepsi! (Is that in the game?)

thephantombrain : Thanks for reading my review :-)  This game is definitely worth a try!  It's in my top 5 favorite all-time games!  I haven't tried Milon's Secret Castle, but if that one is bad, then it's nothing like this awesome game!  Yes, you get a can of Pepsi that you feed to a plant!
