Well I would think overall Pokémon, but I would say Mario franchise is very close to it. I think the fact that Nintendo consoles are the only ones that it can be play on is hurting Mario's overall notability. The reason why  I think that is because I'm not going to buy console to play one franchise, and others might tend to agree.( I really didn't like the GameCube only got  it because of Mario kart  and the Wii is just a waste of my money in my opinion) Well some might say Pokémon is on the same boat as Mario. Since it only has one console too the difference is that Pokémon has a tv-show and Pokémon trainer cards. I think putting these two on more platforms like 360, ps3 etc.. Will increase their fame.

In the mid 90's it was all about Crash Bandicoot for me.  Now, he pretty much fell off the face of the earth.  Megaman is a pretty big franchise, but who knows what the future holds for the blue bomber.

Even if you haven't so much as touched a controller or game of any sort, you've heard of Mario, and I would dare say that literally every gamer has heard of Mario. If not, then I'm certain everyone who plays console games has heard of him.

  Hello Mr. Zed, in my opinion Pokémon is probably one of the most well known video game franchises. Pokémon is a series that I believe can be enjoyed by people of all ages because of it's so stimulating, it's difficult not to get attached to your Pokémon and the games are excellent adventures that never seem to get old.

Can't forget about the madden series either. There has been a new madden installment every year for quite a long time, and it always sells well. John Madden is no longer in the game at all. No voice, no pictures, nothing, just the name on the front. But regardless it has to be considered among the most well known franchises, even if it has sucked the last few years.

It's a battle between Mario and Call of Duty. Both very famous, personally I don't Like either that much since I'm terrible at platformers and there are a lot better FPS games around like Battlefield and Halo (not Halo 4 that was terrible, STUPID 323!!).
