I hope the Rumors are not accurate.
According to One Nerd News reporter Statements from the Series Creator could lead to a decision to cancel the story mode in the next Smash Brothers Game.

Anybody following this story?

I heard that they will not include story mode, and I just don't understand it. Because some cut scenes got leaked isn't a good enough reason to remove an entire part of the game. It isn't like people will be forced to watch the cut scenes, and it's playing the story, not just the cut scenes. It won't really make sense. I don't really care that much, because I didn't find it very fun in brawl, but it was a good change from the main game. I really hope they change their minds and bring it back.

No you can not get rid of the story the subspace emissary was my favorite part of SSBB THEY CAN NOT GET RID OF IT and if the only other solution is to get rid of a character get rid of Dr. mario we have enough games with mario in it already

I'm not terribly sorry if new SBs don't have Story mode. I haven't ever played the story mode and prefer to just Brawl with the characters my friends have unlocked for hours at a time. It would be great if they did a version without story mode but made it half price or cheaper. I don't see it happening but that doesn't stop me from wishing.

It's true (confirmed by the Smash Bros. Direct a few months ago). It will still have Adventure Mode, but it won't be like the Subspace Emissary. That doesn't really bother me too much, though. One reason is that the Subspace Emissary unlocked newcomers way too fast. I did like the idea of unlocking each character without having to play "800 VS matches," but they did unlock characters too fast. I was fine with Melee's Adventure Mode. Although I do prefer the Subspace Emissary for its awesome story, Smash Run mode will make up for it.
