Me i would have to say eminem not only because he sold over 70 millon cd world wide but for his lyric abitiy and word play he say stuff that shouldnt rhyme or go together and make it work... And i dont know if any of you heard his new cd relapse but he hasnt lost a step some people are sayin he lost i. but if you really take the time and listen to it it's probably one of his best cd's that he has put out beside the marshal mather lp that a classic

Yes I don't personally like Eminem a lot (he's alright though)
But he is one of the best selling rap artists.
Mainly because he is very smart musically and knows how to put words together and he also adds humour.

I personally dont like American rap, with the exception of some Public Enemy. Most American rap music revolves around drugs, shooting people and idle threats (in my opinion that is). I prefer Aussie hiphop/rap like Hiltop Hoods, The Herd and Drapht. The majority of their music revolves around politics, Australian culture and nine times out of ten it has no reference to violence.

I must admit Eminem is a very creative with his lyrics.

Are there any non-Caucasians here?

Money, records sold, and blah blah blah have nothing to do with rapping prowess. It's pretty unfair to name just one greatest rapper. Here we go. Rakim. Without him everyone would still sound like the Sugarhill Gang or Melle Mel, if they were lucky. He has the flow, the internal rhyming, and the poise (no homo). Also, Chuck D is another runner for best rapper. He makes up for his less than smooth flow for a fierce, baritone and better lyricism (quality over qrap). The nineties are a new thing all together. Genius / GZA and Pharoahe Monch would be my choices. GZA is a superb emcee in the standard sense of the word. But Pharoahe Monch, he is the essence of of what a master of ceremony could aspire to be. He's quick, nimble, drrty, etc. Listen to "Bring it On" and then you will understand. He's so original so stream-of-consciousness so MONCH.

Eminem can't hold a candle, a match to these guys. It's not because he's white. There are plenty of good white rappers (El-P, Beastie Boys, etc.). His rap is a derivative of these early pioneers. Without them he would be nothing. He speaks as if he has no cahones. Who picks fights with their momma and girlfriend / on-again-off-again wife anyway? Who hides in their house for 3 years? These are not the qualities of an elite rapper. They should be cool, mysterious, street poetics, not pop chart whores.

Take away the Dr. Dre custom beats and BS and what's left?

The Joe from Edmonton is probably one of my favorites ever! He doesn't have the best voice, but he's so intelligent with his wordplay, has the ability to cram humour, political references, and poke fun at the worst in rap ever all in one song.

Check him out:
http://www.myspace.com/thejoehiphop

His new song Apathy is pretty good.

Yeah, any rap after 2004 is just brutal. The soulish and crunchy street sounds of DJ Premier have unfortunately been replaced by mechanical beats by over-rated producer Timbaland. I don't mind musical change, but when the fundementals of rap and extremely warped musically as well as lyrically, the genre just sucks!

Yes, I'm Asian.

Rakim is a classic, and he definately has poetic skill. KRS-One is another one I enjoy. He really knows how to get a message out with slick delivery even though his lyrics can always improve. Yup GZA's pretty good too. "The Joe" opened up for GZA once, so check out my above post where his myspace is. And yes, Eminem's just disturbed for lack of a better adjective.

I listen mostly to west coast rap. So in my opinion the best rappers today are Nipsey Hussle, Jay Rock, Glasses Malone, and of course Suga Free.

Eminem, i liked Eminem before it was cool-then uncool- then uncool again, started listening to his music when I don't give a **** came out in the underground, my bro showed it to me and he didn't like it, so i stole the cd so i could listen to it, then like 2 weeks later he wanted it back

2nd best rapper would be lil wayne, Da carter was a classic

I agree, except for the thing you said about Relapse, it seems he HAS lost some of his magic after that.
