I have only played about three or four Super Metroid ROM hacks that I might actually come back to (Eris, Phazon, Super Zero Mission, Legacy(?)), and all of the others have pretty much totally sucked so far. Also, most of the ROM hacks of other games aren't really good, are they? I''ve heard that Super Mario World ROM hacks are actually very popular. Please leave your thoughts here. I'm just a little disappointed, because one thing that attracted me to this website was that it allowed you to play ROM hacks, and now I love this site because it allows you to play video games AND go on awesome social networking forums. I am so lucky I discovered the potential greatness of this site, but I'm just a little disappointed.

xandermartin98 : Well, it mostly depends on what Rom hack you are playing. Some hacks are good and some hacks aren't really that good. For me, I would play hacked Sonic games and I found a few that are good, a few that are the same old boring sprite hacks, and some that are horrible.

So it depends on what hack you are playing and what hacks you find. Happy gaming man!

Welp In my Opinion. to you're question, Some Hacks Are Somewhat Overrated in my opinion, You know games like the pokemon hacks, No offense, but They get a load of good ratings and A boat load of guides reviews and what not, I do think Those type of hacks are a bit overrated, but not by much. If it's a bad hack or Like a pirated game Yea.. I don't think It would be too sucessful, In other words... yea I think some hacks are a bit overrated, but others not so much

Pokemon is popular for a reason. I don't think it's overrated.

Most of the ROM hacks you'll find aren't that spectacular, but then you'll find a few really good ones that you love. It all depends on the ROM hack, and you can't really generalize them because they're all unique.

Depends on what hack you are playing I guess.
So not all of them are overrated and I have seen good hacks with less gratitude from people that play the overrated ones all the time.

I think that rom hacks are very overrated... people think that they can make something good out of their hacks and most of what I've seen just isn't any better than the actual game. I even tampered with hacking a rom and even though I thought it was good, I didn't think other people would see it as good. People have a warped and twisted mindset and personally, I've never understood people as a whole. Like, people are so big on a game's graphics that nothing else matters. Just because the graphics look cool means that the actual value of gameplay means nothing. For example: Idiots who run around quick-scoping people with a sniper class gun. I don't see any value in a hacked rom.

It just really depends on the hack itself and the game being hacked that determine if it is going to be good or overrated or just plain horrible. As the "legal" game lists happen to have good, bad, overrated, famous and not so famous games, the same happen with the hacks. I really like the Fire Emblem, pokemon and mario hacks but sometimes I see that some hacks that offer almost to no modification seems to become overrated while other good ones happen to pass unnoticed.
