It was not. Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels was only released in Japan until this compilation came out. In Japan it was called Super Mario Bros 2. We got Doki Doki Panic instead, just renamed Super Mario Bros 2.

LOL you accidentally summoned a user in your post! Anyway the Lost Levels was made in Japan. Nintendo made an easier USA version.
