I now like the DS version more because it's more difficult, you can play as more than one character, there are more courses, and there's one additional star in each main course.

I have changed my opinion to the Nintendo 64 version of Super Mario 64 because you don't have to switch characters all of the time, and Mario has every ability that the three in 64 DS have.

I prefer the DS version, as I never liked the controller fpr the N64 anyway. Always made my hands hurt. DS has some extra stars and paintings too, but I guess that the N64 is better in the fact that you don't need to change characters every half hour.

While the N64 version looked better to me, and I favored its controls, the DS version tips the scales in many ways. It truly defines what should be a remake, where instead of just giving the original updated graphics or text, it also adds new content to the game that gives new life to an old idea. Super Mario 64 DS had more playable characters, more courses and stars to collect, mini-games with multiplayer support, and the touchscreen mini-map. Even though I played the N64 game first, who am I to let nostalgia make my choices? I'll take the DS version anyday.

PacmanandMariofan : I will say that I like Super Mario 64 better than the DS version because I never played the DS version as I have never had a DS. I also know for a fact that the Kameks are not in Super Mario 64 and I do not know the same about the DS version. (In case you don't know this, the Kameks are a great annoyance to me. Their ugly mugs have ruined far too many good mario games)

While the DS version added bunch of new features to the original game (new characters, powers, courses), I prefer the N64 version more. For the simple fact, that it introduced a new way of gaming and the graphics, at that time, felt more wacky and cartoonish...and, maybe because I'm more a nostalgia guy.

PacmanandMariofan : That's all right, I actually had completely forgotten about this thread. It's nice to see you again. That is a great relief to know though! Is it practically the same game, or a different game with the same style?

FaithFighter : It has 30 extra stars, and some of them require you to play as a certain character. You can play as Mario, Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario. All characters except Yoshi you have to unlock. It has new levels as well as extra stars in the main courses, so it's a neat sequel to the original!

I'd have to say I like the original better. I've played both, but I've only 100%ed the original. I don't know, the DS one just seems to have kind of a... sucky quality to it. I know it has more to do, but the original feels more fluid to play.

Original.
Many reasons why, I like the controls better, it just feels smoother, and nostalgia just beat the DS version. Even though, I do admit DS is technically better, I like the original a lot more.

I really like the original. But, I also like the differences and the changes in the DS version. This is a really hard one, but I will have to say the original, because you can not beat a classic.

For me Super Mario is better for Nintendo 64. I have personally not played that game in DS but, I have played other Mario games in DS and I really hated it. I find it hard to jump and do any tricks per say using the DS as opposed to the 64 controller. I prefer the analog honestly it makes it easier for me to control the character. The only games I like to play in DS are Donkey Kong and Cooking Mama games. Anything with Mario I rather play it on a big screen and using remotes.

Ooh, this is really tough for me.

On one hand, the DS version was not just a straight graphical remake of the original Super Mario 64. It allowed you to play more characters, had more overall stars, and had additional boss battles, too.

At the same time, the N64 version actually controls well. Most of the blame lies on the hardware in this case, the same way I can excuse Kid Icarus Uprising for its control scheme due to the lack of natural dual-stick on the 3DS. There's no analog control on the DS, and you can at least applaud their efforts in trying to make it possible (through the touchscreen, although it was very inaccurate and usually led to you falling into an otherwise avoidable hole). The fact still stands, though, that the DS just didn't offer the control necessary for the game.

I guess I'll have to go with the original here; good control is far more important than additional content, regardless of it being the hardware to blame in this case.

I prefer the original since I haven't been able to play the one on the ds version sadly. I would still prefer the original despite if I were to had played the ds version. Because I enjoy it more.
