Hook was one of my favorite movies growing up and Hook for the Sega CD was one of my favorite Sega CD games. The Sega CD version of the game was easily the best version of the game due to the amazing soundtrack and the fact that it had voice acting. The problem I always had with the voice acting though was that it wasn't the original actors and when I was a kid I always wondered why they just didn't use the audio clips from the movie. Well that's what this project is about.

What I plan to do is take audio clips from the movie and replace the audio clips during the cutscenes of the game so that playing the game is more of a movie experience, which is why I'll be naming this hack 'Hook - Movie Version' or 'Hook - Movie Edition'. I might replace some of the music as well because the movie had amazing music and I don't quite remember if the game has the same music or not or if the movie's version of the songs are better.

This is more of a project to please myself rather than others but I do hope that this pleases those who grew up playing the game or watching the movie because I remember 20+ years ago wishing the game had the audio clips from the movie and this is a way to fulfill my childhood wish.

This shouldn't be a very long project. I plan to start sometime this week and I plan to finish probably sometime next week. Replacing the audio for a Sega CD game is incredibly easy. All you really do is replace the mp3 files within the compressed game. So really the only time consuming part of this project is watching the movie a few times (which I have on DVD), capturing sound clips and maybe even finding and downloading the movie soundtrack.

Lazlo Falconi : I remember you mentioning that you liked Hook the movie so I thought I'd summon you to this thread since you might take interest in this project.

Oh neat. Yeah I did like that film. I never played the game, though, so I don't know what the differences are. But I'll give your hack a try when it's done.

Interesting idea here. Although I really enjoyed the movie Hook, I barely know anything about the game. I look forward to seeing how your project works when it's finished.

TheFadedWarrior : If you liked the movie, than you should like the game and you should especially like this audio hack of the game since it'll be using audio clips from the actual movie.

I watched Hook just the other day, it was always one of my favorite movies. And I think the idea to replace audio clips from the movie directly into the game is amazing. I for one will be giving it a play when it is up and running, looking forward to it!

Is this finished yet? This looks cool. It's always nice to see hacks that improve the game greatly. 

earthwarrior : I'm about 75% complete, I think I should be able to finish today.

Believe it or not, the only 3 programs I'm using are the following:
1. Camstudio: I use this to record the movie clips (I have the movie on DVD)
2. Windows Movie Maker: I use this to import the movie clips, edit the clips, import music when necessary, do some sound adjustments, transition adjustments, etc
3. Freemake Video Convertor: I use this to convert the video file into an MP3 file

All free programs and all easy to use.

I still need to find a program to increase the overall volume of the MP3 files because they aren't as loud as the original and that'd be a problem.

No like what program are you using to insert and remove the mp3 files? 

earthwarrior : Nothing, it's incredibly simple to replace the music of a Sega CD game. Basically you replace the MP3s within the zipped file. If you want to replace a track, name your new track the same as the one you want to replace, delete that old track and put in your new track. You have to make sure the new track is MP3 format and 128 KBPS.

Of course this only works for Sega CD games where the MP3s is in the same zip file as the iso and all the Sega CD games on vizzed work this way. Also, not all Sega CD games use MP3s and some don't use many.

I'm a little behind on this project, the site like always has been keeping me a little busier than expected, plus this project is a little more time consuming than I predicted. I'm about 95% complete and should have it up and ready tomorrow or Thursday.

I'm about 99% complete now. I just got done increasing the volumes of the MP3s using a website called http://www.grab-tube.com/mp3-volume . Now all I have left to do is add them to the game, zip it up, upload it and create a page for it.

I finished the hack a few days ago but I haven't made a thread regarding it yet because I was going to wait until I get around to showing clips of the cut-scenes before and after.

Singelli : This is kind of like my way of stepping into the Rom Hacking world, I plan to make 1 or 2 more Rom hacks between now and the end of the year. I started a few rom hacks 10+ years ago but I never made enough progress to release anything.

I'd like to eventually have a Vizzed Rom Hacking team who work together to hack various games and for those hacks to be exclusive to vizzed. Vizzed doesn't really have many hacks that are exclusive to the site so I'd like to change that. I think if users of this site were given the tools and instructions on how to hack their own games (for Mario or Pokemon), many users would do it. Maybe that means I need to put something together this summer.

Davideo7:  I didn't want to say it, but I was hoping you'd be making more.  I wish I knew a bit more about it myself, as I think it could be fun. However, I think even the ease of technology has been overwhelming me to this year, and I never understood just how far behind I was in those terms until about half a year ago, really.  Before a few Saturdays ago, I had never even touched an iPad!  LOL

Therefore, even if it's pretty simple, I know I would doubt myself far too much.  I'll leave all the technical stuff to you guys. XD

I think having a room of exclusive hacks is brilliant.  It'd be a reason for people to join vizzed, whether it's for the sake of playing them, or creating their own.

Singelli : If you're serious about this I can help you out some. I know a fair bit about hacking and can guide you along. 

earthwarrior : I want to keep hacks made for vizzed exlusive to vizzed so therefore I wouldn't want them to be downloadable, otherwise users could take them and upload them to their own site. Now if you know how, you can retrieve the game on your own computer after you've played it.

Singelli : Actually, yeah, I do plan to make a room for hacked games eventually. The room would not only show off the hacks made for vizzed but it'd also be a collection of all hacks in general.
