It has been bothering me recently about all of the terrible and short game reviews. I propose that the system for submitting reviews would be revised. My first idea is to increase the minimum word count. It is too common for a review to just scrape the 100 word minimum. A larger number, such as 500 will make people have to think before they make their review. The thing is, that alone would not actually stop people from making these reviews and posting them, so to add on to that idea I think that the thread creator for reviews should not allow the writer to post it unless the review actually hits the higher word minimum.
Does anyone else have any idea that would make there be less crappy reviews?

I'm pretty sure the 100 words minimum has been suggested. It hasn't been implemented so I don't think it is possible.
I disagree with the 500 words minimum. For better games it would help, but for certain hacks and old computer games if would be hard. Te general length for a hack or old computer games are 250 words. Not many people can write 500 words for those types of games. E.T. A2600, I believe, for example would be really hard to get 500 words. I don't think I could. The graphics don't have much to talk about and there is no story at all. It's basically an alien trying to get home. Unless you seem the movie it wouldn't make a lot of snese.

I think the Word Minimum Should Be increased to 500 too.
But.
I also think that the person should have completed the game before submitting any idea of a review.
Particularly if it is on this site.

If it is a short game but has a long list of characters Like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat??
Then they should Play through at least Half the cast From Beginning to end.
Call it the 1/2 cast Rule.
Apply it to Beat-Em-Ups too.

I think allot of reviews here are just popularity shout outs with no substance.

I found one person did 3 R.P.G. Reviews in just Three Days.
For each game that could take 100 hours??? I think it to be a little odd to do 3 reviews and give them a good score if you did not finish them.

If people are worried about Spoilers then just have the reviewer post a photo of the end credits.
Attach photo at the end of the review.
Crappy Reviews nearly all gone.

What does everyone else say???

Good Luck To All.
Peace.

You are not allowed to have images in reviews, nor are you allowed any HTML.
I find your beat the game rule interesting, but how would it be enforced? One possible way could be them having to make a screenshot, and if it matches a base screenshot for the end of the game, then it will count for them as they have beat the game. And for that, there could be a new interesting feature: On users game profiles, it would list what games they have beat.
The half of the characters in a fighting game rule would be pretty good and would ensure that they have played the game enough, but I have no idea how that could possibly be forced, except maybe just as a recommendation, which would not do us much good considering that the 100 word minimum is a recommendation and yet we still get incredibly small reviews.

tails the fox : Actually, I think that staff can include screenshots in their reviews. But I think that the best the idea of having a minimum of 250 - 300 words would be the best.  With 300, it requires some sort of explanation of the game. And although the beating the game thing is interesting, I actually only have reviewed one or two games that I've completed on Vizzed. Most of them, I have beaten on my Game Boy Advance, or Wii, or whatever.

EDIT: Something that could help, is if there was some guideline for the reviews, that shows how the review should be written out, with showing where the score should go, and whatever, could help with less bad reviews also.

You can add pictures if you want. Just no other HTML.
Well I didn't beat games, but I still reviewed them. The reviews turned put pretty good too. You can take a look if you want. My Final Fantasy IV review is a great example.
But there is no need to finish the game. I'm pretty sure I've never beaten a long game on vizzed so then I wouldn't be able to review them. I'm pretty sure this would just lower the amount of reviews we get. And I'm prett sure that can't be automated so it would make a lot more work for the staff. It would be almost impossible to go through every single review that pops up and verify this.
And patar there already are guidelines. When you type the review next to the post editor are simple descriptions. The problem is most people don't read this.

earthwarrior : I mean more like there is something that will show you how your review should be written out like. More about how to lay the whole review out. Because most of the bad reviews are all written as one paragraph. The rules don't really explain it as much as what I'm thinking should be implemented.

earthwarrior : Then there needs to be a way to get them to actually read it. Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea how that would be possible. I understand you reviewing games you haven't quite finished if they are very long, but I am talking about the average sized game, not quite the vastness of the Final Fantasy games. I feel that the minimum words can be automated though, it just doesn't let them post it until they have reached it.
patar4097: A possible way to fix the paragraph problem is to have the thread creator have multiple textboxes, each listed with a different subject, such as a Graphics textbox, and a gameplay one.

tails the fox : heres some i deas i currently have 1 reviews should be 300 words 2 there should be more tips at the reviewing page other than just use proper  grammar because that alone was not very helpful when i was new  to reviewing games. 3 The system should check if they talked about all categories to make sure the review is complete and through. 4 they can include screenshots of them playing a game of the game because that lets people know if they had played the game or not  to know your being truthful about the game if you are reviewing it. 6 There should be a copy paste checker  i ve seen alot of trash threads that manly has something to do with users copy pasting stuff from other sites a copy paste checker would prevent all of that and removed what stuff had been copy pasted from another site .

SuperCrash64 : 1) The copy and paste checker is called google.
2) Your grammar is rather bad there. Do not comment on that unless you do not have the problem yourself.
3) Nobody is going to pay attention if there are more tips.
4) Why would they not be talking about the game?

Okay, I know that was in the wrong order, but my points are still valid.

I always complete a game before I review it.
The one I have not completed I did as a gag. Its a Comadore game with a good title that I used for a discussion on another subject all together.
Only 6 people played the thing in the ten years this site was open.
A couple of folks wanted to cause problems but thankfully the mods got the joke and dismissed it.

Back to the issue at hand I think a Completion time might verify a few things.
No Idea on how to implement a system to track it. but it is an idea to keep things simple from a programming angle. (Just let the mods see the time and not the public is all.)

Good Luck To All.
Peace.

SuperCrash64 :  Now, most of those things would be great, but they would be pretty much impossible to implement. And about the review page saying pretty much just to use good grammar, that's pretty much what I was saying. If there were more guidelines, the reviews would be much better, and even more effective if it gets put right in the middle of the page for newbies  normal users.

tails the fox : That actually sounds like a really good idea. If you were to separate it like that, it would, or at least should, fix the mega paragraph problem.

tails the fox :   1 Not many people use the copy paste checker that is Google because they do that on purpose to earn Viz and abuse the review system . 2 Tips on the page can give people more possible ideas of what they should be doing in a review.3 I did not say they would not be talking about the game I said screen shots can be helpful for proof if they played what game that they are reviewing.4 another thing i meant is they should talk about the page categories that way reviews are more completed. Thats what i meant there  sorry if i did not make myself clear on that statement

SuperCrash64: Well a copy and paste checker wouldn't work because sometimes people take reviews that they written for other sites and put it here.
I think separating the paragraphs would be confusing. It's pretty self explanatory to type into a single white box, but six different boxes may get confusing. Some reviews don't format like that either so it would hurt the people who do it differently.
I think it's fine as it is besides the minimum 100 words. Everything else helps in some cases, but hurts in others.

orionfoxgibson: If we increase the word count, that will not stop someone from not conforming to the category rules, and the review can still suck. The way that is now, people wont have to go through a lot of crap typing a 500 word review just to realize that the review is not the way it should. I learned quickly how to write reviews from advice when I wrote ones that weren't good. Now I'm a site staff reviewer, I think the system works out well the way it is.

Increasing the amount of words was not my Idea.
The idea of having the player finish the game before being able to even make a review would decrease allot of problems with reviews period.
Think of it as an....Unlockable feature.
It is only a matter of time.
As I have alluded to anyway.

WAIT WAIT. This idea would not work, if someone were to complete the game when not on vizzed, then they would have to complete it again, that's not right. Disregard

You have not programmed much of anything in your spare time growing up have you?

It can be done.
Simple Office Software can do it.
It is an "if, then" statement command that is easily done.

I Could Do it with "Turbo Pascal" if I were Inclined.
