Let's just say you were too get lost in the woods, desert, jungle ( away from any civilization ). You have no phone or lighters or flashlights. Would you have the skills to survive and find your way to civilization? I myself watch alot of shows on television about the subject and am curious just how many people here have the skills to survive in a situation like this. WARNING, do not get lost on purpose, A situation like this can be very dangerous and or deadly : )

I'd never survive. I love Les Stroud and SurvivorMan has taught me some cool stuff but I'm way too much of a pansy. I'd probably get eaten by a bear on the first night. If I had decent gear and the weather/area wasn't super extreme, I could maybe last a little bit, but I don't think I'd have the smarts or the know-how to get me rescued.

KG :   Thanks for a reply KG! I was thinking I wouldn't get one lol. Anyways I'm sure a lot of people would be in deep trouble in a situation like this. I could survive in the summer but a cold winter would be a lot tougher.

It would depend a lot on what I had on me when I got lost. If I had a knife I think I would be able to manage for a little while. Long term and I would probably be done though. I don't know how some people manage to survive for a week or more at a time with nothing but a knife and what they can get/make.

Yes, I could survive just fine.
Before you ask..No I am not a boy scout.
On the east coast states you will hear all kinds of outlandish tales of survival. Some are true. Others are fiction. If you spend enough time you will have lessons drilled into your skull that you wish you could forget.
But
Some of the tips come in handy.
Like finding water and directing yourself with the stars.
Others are totally useless (like witch plants you can eat or not).
I can find my way back to civilization just fine.
Many-a-time after a hurricane the rivers would be over flowing and a couple of buddies would invite me and decide to go rafting in the dangerous waters due to the fun and challenge of new obsticals and increased speed of the flow.
Many times we would end up on the "flipside of reality" and a new city we have never been to before. Granted there are better ways to kill time when the powers out and the gas pumps are down... but...
Where would the fun be with a case of "cabin fever"?
I do not recommend anyone try this themselves. It's just a day in the life of Fox I decided to share.

Good Look To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

orionfoxgibson :   That's pretty awsome, good for you. For myself I can get turned around in the woods and loose my bearings pretty easy lol. Maybe I should google up about star navigating.

I think I could pull through.

I have had some survival training in the past, so that would be a big help.

At the very least I would know how to make shelter, and know the best way to acquire food for myself.

So I stand a fairly good chance.

EvilAlu : Yea, I would think those are the most important things to know. I learned some things from the survivor show about purifying water and stuff, I just hate the lost feeling when I get turned around in the woods. The best I could do to get out of the woods would be to mark a point and walk back and forth, north, east, west, south until I eventually find a road or something lol.

I really depends on what I have, and what clothes/shoes I'm wearing. But in most cases, I think I would do well.

My friends and I often go wilderness camping, where we find (on google maps) a large natural protected area, which in Canada is not hard to find, and go in without a tent and only some food. We only will stay a weekend or so and we have lot's a knives, a kettle, and tarps. But this year I plan on doing a "bare necessities" camping trip: only a survival kit and and a cell phone (for emergency). So I think with that little bit of practice, surviving a week or two would be manageable, I've read a lot about surviving, and can find water and navigate pretty well.

orionfoxgibson : That sounds like a blast! I've canoed a 4 day river before, but we had tents and food and all that. I think I may try what you've done sometime!

Light Knight :
Be Careful.
I grew up in a generation that did not have cell phones and Internet.
You may want to pack a knife and a good water canteen.
I can not stress how dangerous it is.
After Hurricanes the amount of contagions, Animals, and Whatever in the water could cause serious Illness.
Unless you are used to the out doors, like you stated, I would advise you to decline the notion.
Modern kids are not really not "unplugged" enough to try such a stunt. If you catch my drift.
So beware. You have been warned. You have been Cautioned.

Good Luck What Ever You Decide.
Peace.
