The competitions could have various objectives, such as
getting the best score at a single course, or fastest time at an
all- range mode level. Not a level where you just travel from point A to
point B as there isn't much You can do to effect the time taken to beat it.

Yeah... except there's the problem of we'd only be stuck in air vehicles most of the time, unless some host has landmaster or pilot combat unlocked. Personally, I've been curious to how pilot combat worked in Star Fox 64, since I never got to experience multiplayer in that game or any of the other Star Fox games.

I've heard about the figure 8 which I think was in Assault.

Muti-player is kinda like Shooting down Star Wolf, only your opponent will do a lot more sumersaults
and barrel rolls, you can also fly low to the ground and not be detected on radar.

Sword legion : Huh. That last little bit's interesting, but it does have some grounding in reality. In aviation, that's called N.O.E., or Nap of the Earth. Amazing what the devs thought of for multiplayer in that game.

Sword legion : Yup. And losing even one wing in this series meant you lost your weapon upgrades. Which got bad, especially in Assault's last mission. God forbid you lose your max powered laser on that level on gold difficulty.
