I have mixed feelings with the Sonic 4 series. It has fun 2D gameplay, but I think Sega treats the Sonic 4 games like silly side projects to make the nostalgia buffs happy. The physics are a little bit awkward, and the games just feel cheesy. I like the gameplay of the 2 games, but I just don't like the rest. They just don't serve the Genesis titles justice.

What do you think of the series.

I actually like it. Sure, the physics might be a little off, but it's still playable, those who don't have a real reason why they hate it are just butthurt.

As standalone titles both games aren't that bad, though the physics are a tad off and the level themes don't feel inspired, basing them off other levels from the Genesis titles(excluding White Park). My biggest beef with it is that it's called Sonic 4 and it's split up between "episodes". It doesn't expand on Sonic 3 and Knuckles and does not feel that innovative. Also, the fact that it's being released in episodes just feels like that once they finished 1 they moved on to 2 without out thinking of possibly making a downloadable patch to improve on one. Again, I don't hate Sonic 4, but the fact that it's called Sonic 4 and is split into episodes is what bugs me the most.

Personally, I think it was a good addition to the Sonic universe. The 2.5D perspective idea was a nice touch to the series. The physics, yes, I will admit, are messed up in the first installment. But, the second game totally makes up for it. Overall, Sonic 4 is a game you should try and see how you like it for yourself.
