Well, to have a cat, you need to be willing to change the litter box. Now, if you are fine with that, the rest should be pretty easy. Now, unless you get it de-clawed (which I think is a bad thing to do), then you will need some kind of scratching post. Your cat can, and will rip up your furniture. And keep a squirtbottle for a while. Give it a squirt when it does something bad. And if you have any other pets, like birds or fish, make sure the cat can't get them. Chances are, the cat will try to get them. Other than that, you just need to give it some toys, food, and love. Good luck!

Also be sure that it's spayed or neutered. I've made the mistake of not doing so in the past, and ended up getting cat urine sprayed everywhere. Nasty smell. lol It'll stink up your furniture bad.

Eirinn : Yeah, I forgot about that. Yes, that is very important.  Our cat urinated on our carpet almost two years ago, and you can still sometimes smell it. Yeah, it's not fun. It will ruin whatever it goes on.

There are three things I find are especially hard to get used to when owning a cat.
  1. They will scratch some furniture. Unless you are home all day, many cats will scratch at least a little behind your back. Unless you get them declawed, there is almost no stopping it. Things you can do to help: Be very strict every time it DOES scratch something it shouldn't. Keep it's claws cut short. Buy a scratching posts. Consider getting sticky pads that prevent them stretching things.
  2. You need to find someone to take care of it when you are away. No longer can you just get up and go, it takes more planing.
  3. Litter does not smell great and is a little messy. Your cats will tract a small amount of litter out of the box, so sweeping or vacuuming must be increased in frequency.

Also keep in mine that animals a pet stores are not always treated well or bred in mills. Even if they are well treated and from a good source, there are 100s or animals who need a home because there were abandoned or homeless. They can be found at rescue centres and are well priced. Often they have a package deal that includes shots and a fix (spay/neuter). Something to consider.
