Absolutely not. Kids who do violent acts don't do it because of the video games. They were fully capable of those acts already. Video games do not cause this. The only correlation one can make is that kids who end up doing those acts of violence (and are video game players) played violent video games. Those games appeal to their nature, but that nature was already a part of them. Saying video games is what makes a kid do violent acts is like saying that Animal Planet made someone become a Biologist, or Comedy Central made kids become comedians, etc.

A person who blames video games for their actions is a person who refuses to take responsibility for their own free will choices.

No I don't think that video game make kid do violent. Only kid do bad and act more violent. So there are no reason to blame on the video game and blame on kids. So I opposed that video games are not violent, but other kid do something more violent. The only person to blame is the kid and not the video game.

rcarter2 : while I agree with you I would also say that in the same way that music and movies can have both positive or negative influences so can video games.

If you spend all of your time listening to music or watching movies that glorify hate and/or violent things these things become more normal to you.

To say that these things have NO effect is naive. However, to blame the video game alone is also as naive as saying that a band or certain movie is to blame for other things. I believe it's not any single thing but the combination of negative influences that contribute to violence.

No, video games don't make kids violent, but they can desensitize them to violence, and I believe they do. Television is the same way. I have no issues with games that contain violence (I play some myself), but they do have the power to make us more tolerant of things. For example, if you don't like hearing people swear, and you start playing games that contain alot of language, you'll eventually get to where it doesn't bother you. It's the same way with extreme violence in games. And while I don't think games will make kids violent, I do often wonder if games and shows give those that are already violent, ideas. So many games and shows are cooking up new ways to torturously kill someone, and it just seems like this can only have a negative effect.

To sum it up, no I don't think that games make kids violent, but if the people that play them are not careful, the games can be detrimental.

geeogree : That is where a lack of a combination of proper parenting and adequate socialization play a role. Sure, violent content can desensitize a kid, but it doesn't have to. When you have parents who don't bother to involve themselves enough in raising their kids, you get kids who don't get as high of a sense between right and wrong. When kids are allowed to replace getting out of the house and with playing video games all day long, they don't get the proper social interaction to develop their sense of empathy. Technically, you can say that it can influence a kid. But it is still a choice of the kid to either spend time with people or be a video game recluse. It is the choice of the parent to be more involved in their kids lives and make sure they get the proper social interactions and teaching to develop their empathy.

I agree, which is why I generally oppose video game censorship. I think, like with most things, there are lines that don't NEED to be crossed which are but that's more of a personal thing than an actual problem. I feel that way about movies and music too.

I actually do wonder what the relationship that the people who do end up committing violent crime have with their parents. Did they grow up in single parent homes or with divorced parents. I imagine there is a stronger correlation to that than to violent video games/music/movies.

You also throw in poverty into the mix actually (which usually goes hand in hand with single parent families) and that is almost guaranteed to explain more than exposure to violent media ever will.

Personally I do not think video games cause people to be violent however I do believe it can accelerate people's violent tenancies but like the old saying goes you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. I believe you need to have the thoughts already in your unconscious and them thoughts then the games bring them thoughts into your conscious, but these thoughts are still seeds they need to mature for them to drive you to kill. For them to be matured they need to have constant exposure to the games with somebody commenting on your usage, this would give the persons anger direction making it more likely to cause violence. However like all plants it can be killed if it is caught early enough and action is taken quickly. (this might be a bit mis worded but I am really sleepy after been sick all week, please reply and tell me if you think I am correct

Does art or music make people do violent things?
No.
A video game was deemed an art-form and given its own museum. (In recent years.)
So, I would have to say no a game can not make a person violent.

If all I said is too much to digest then the simple answer is....NO.

Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

No I do not think video games make kids violent, I think violent video games provide stress release for some kids, and kids are in control of thier own actions anyways, so most of the time this is just an excuse to give kids a reason to go out and do violent things.

SuperCrash64 :
What you described is Poor Parenting.
I do not know any one who would leave firearms around Kids. Looks like you found one.
Secondly?
Obviously Zero time was invested in teaching morals and scruples to this child.
No one thought to teach the kid the value of human life?
I find it very hard to believe.
But...
If the story you are referring to is true then I would have to clear up the issue to say that it is a story of poor parenting and leave it at that.

Good Luck To All.
Peace.
