So, yeah, I'm unemployed.

Have been for a long ass time.

I do what I'm supposed to.

- apply
- call in to check my app
- come in to see if my app is being considered.
- wait by the phone
- repeat ad finitum

Person after person is hired, and I dont know what I'm doing wrong.

I've been turned down everywhere from Staples to McDonalds and it's agitating me.

I dress nice, shave, basically do my best to look hirable, yet it's still not enough.

I have a high school diploma, and I have the ability to work any hours, fulltime, parttime, seasonal, etc.

I get interviews sometimes, and I answer questions honestly, with the occasional embellishment when it comes to things regarding my skills, but never over the top or an outright lie.

I'm 20 and need a job.

I can't live without money, it's rather important. I cant keep mooching off my grandmother. As it is we barely get by.

So yeah. I turn to you guys, because no one else is really helping.

legacyme3 :  Is there a college campus nearby?  There are almost always a plethora of jobs around college campuses.  Turn out is high and employees in those areas are usually understanding of odd hours.  They'd probably love someone available nearly all the time.  I bet you'd have better luck there.  Maybe even a job within the college campus if they don't restrict hiring to only students.

Singelli :

This isnt what you asked, but ill pre-empt any questions.

I tried college once and I'm already in debt.

College is not an option unless its free.

And it never is for people like me.

Now to answer YOUR question

no, there is no campus nearby. The closest is out of my range. So working at one is not feasible.

Have you tried looking on Craigslist?

I've been able to find clients on there before.

Annette :

Yeah, but I'm wary of most of the listings. Either its for something I know I can't do, or something really shady. I'm trying to avoid it at tgis point given my luck with the site in the past.

Plus, most of the listings are outdated in my area. Like old enough theyve likely been handled lol.

Try the Military or Law Enforcement Departments.
Granted, No one really likes all the running but it does pay the bills.
Many of my co-workers in the warehouse I work in had to do the same thing when the "higher-ups" laid off a ton of staff. Remember when Lowe's got rid of half of it's work force? In 2009? (My Company Supplies their direct competition.) I don't have much but it's what I got.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck To Us All.

Peace.

orionfoxgibson :

I dont mind running. I was a cross country runner once. I did it for fun.

The only problem with those careers is that the military would require me to contradict one of my very basic goals, and the entire reason for wanting a job. Military is a no go.

Law enforcement... I think there's a requirement that you have to be able to defend yourself. I'm a total pacifist and doubt they'd let me have a desk job. I cant compromise my morals for money. Morals is all I got.

legacyme3 : I think everyone goes through experiences like that at one time or another. I have a couple of things that are working against me, one I am disabled and am limited as to what I can do physically. Two I am a drop out and even though that’s not good I feel that it isn’t exactly ethical to disqualify people just because they didn’t finish high school but that’s me. The other problem is I am a writer. I have worked for years to try and get something solid where I can make a living but it isn’t exactly the easiest profession. I tell people all the time I have come to accept that God gave me the gift to write but at the same time it is one of the most difficult ways to make a living.

Where I live the primary industry is telemarketing and customer service. I’ve tried those jobs if you want to call them that and it just wasn’t for me. It does bother me because I know I have skills despite my setbacks. Hopefully sooner rather than later I’ll get something that will at minimum make things easier on me at least. I pray for it every day. I probably will never make a million dollars but it would be nice to be able to make a decent solid living doing what I’ve been doing for years and hopefully not feel so stressed all the time. It’s frustrating for me as a writer who’s been published worldwide to say after doing this for most of my life I’m still struggling but it’s part of paying dues.

It is frustrating when you know you have skills and can do certain things but for whatever reason can’t get with something solid or, you can’t get a straight answer from someone or a company that you’ve gone to looking for work. I have been there plenty of times.

Hang in there my friend. Best of luck to you.

You don't have to hurt people when you work with a uniform.
Just talk to some of them. I am certain you will find the experience "enlightening."
Besides there are several other jobs in those departments that require people that have talent and skills. Just go in, get weighed, and measured, and see what they find wanting.
Want to fly? Pilots for these outfits are a hard job to get for some due to degrees.
Want to do paperwork? They absolutely have work for you.
Want to be Cook? They got work for you.
Try Firefighter for Airforce. Those guys actually write books waiting to get deployed sometimes.
There are a billion different jobs dude. Getting in will be a wait and a half.
Just a thought.
Good Luck Dude.
Peace.

If you live near a train station company, you can try out for a conductor job. I do not know how it works in some states/companies, but one near me will school you for free on conducting if they think you are worthy. Problem is, LOTS of people want that job so it can be hard to get into.

I was in your position not very long ago. Only 5 months ago was I able to get a REAL job in the last 4 or 5 years (College put me in debt as well, though I did graduate... with no job help from it!). I do not care for my job much, but I also do not hate it. Have you tried Fed Ex or UPS or other postal carrier jobs as a package handler? They have a high turn over rate and are usually ALWAYS looking. Right now, this is a bit of their dry season, but it does not hurt to get your name in there.

For my application, I had to first go down to the facility to a "Sort observation." It honestly is to give you an idea of what to expect on the job and to scare off people. People that still are interested fill out an application on a computer and wait for the call for an interview. Get a call, interviewed, and if they like you, they may hire you on the spot, but usually take a week or two before being called.

I work at Fed Ex and the money is pretty nice, but the labor is brutal. You make more money if you work later shifts, and it is always 5 days a week you will work (and in December, you may have to work Sunday mornings). If you have any other questions on this, I'd be happy to help you.

I AM looking for another job right now using Craig's list, but only because I am tired of waking up so sore in the morning.

Here's a little advice :

After an interview, try sending a thank you letter to your interviewer. My teacher once told me that she landed several jobs by doing that simple act.

This is a problem for a lot of people I know, including my husband. He lives in a states where there are very few jobs to begin with, and they are all snatched up really fast by older people...

In a bad economy, we adolescents now have to compete with older people who have been laid off and are also looking for work left and right.

Businesses are usually way faster to hire a middle-aged person with years of work experience and possibly higher education, than to hire young people who have less experience and are probably not finished school or can't afford school in said terrible economy. :/

are you getting any interviews?if for the most part, the answer is no, its down to your cv.
Nowadays jobs are harder to come by (thank you oh mighty unrestricted capatalism >=( )so you really have to stand out. Unfortunately you (as far as im aware) dont have much in the way of work experience, and that right there is a massive handicap. Its a great irony, people need jobs, cant get one due to inexperience, and cant get experience because there arent jobs.
Personally id volunteer left right and centre. As well as experience they may move to hire you if you leave.
Also, almosty every job wants you to list hanging with friends as a hobby, that you love conversing and meeting people, basically people skills, go nuts with it.
As for the army, that could be a decent route, they can train you as an engineer or something non combat oriented. Thats knowledge when your times up, plus experience and money in the meantime.
Plus, americans seem to have a love affair with the military, it could help future employment.
And dont the usa have some kind of blatent bribery where they pay for your scholarship when you've served your time?
You used to be into running too, they'll keep you fit in the army.
Those are just a few considerations. I wouldnt join anything combat oriented because I dont particulary trust my government (or the usa) to actualy use the army as a force of good.

thenumberone : Actually, many veterans find it almost harder to get a job after they come home. I'm not happy with that fact, but it's true. The military is popular, but no one wants a veteran. Messed up.

Leggy: I wouldn't call you un-hirable, but I do marvel that you haven't gotten any job offers. Some thoughts... Attitude is most of it, from my dads perspective. If you're pleasant, respectful, enthusiastic, and show that you're motivated to take the company to the top, I'm sure you'll have a better chance. Also, be early! My dad says that the interview starts when you drive on the property. They'll be watching how you act in your car, walking up, and during the actual interview. (My dad is currently hiring, so he told me this from an interviewers perspective). I hope you can find a job! I'd love to pray for you, if you don't mind.

legacyme3 : Its tough out there man. Depending on where you live there is probably a lot of competition. It can also get frustrating because nowadays companies usually don't get back to you if you weren't hired.

Do you have any former job experience? If not, this is a major handicap. If you are applying for jobs that require a resume, have you looked into possibly re-writing it?

Also you might consider going to job fairs in your area. They are usually free. They usually have companies that are looking to hire that you can talk to and people that can give you feedback on your resume and other advice.

Also I would suggest going through some test interview questions with a friend/family member that can be honest with you as to their opinions on your answers/mannerisms. This process requires you to be honest, but to also give them what they want to hear at times...the most important thing though is to stand out in some way. If some job has 50+ other applicants you have to really set yourself apart.

Are there any factories around? Factories love hiring people with no experience, because their jobs are easy, and they don't need to pay out as much. have you tried supermarkets?

What about temp/placement agencies? Try to find one of those and they'll hook you up with temporary jobs in offices, factories, and other simple industries.

The key point to getting hired though is to keep yourself in the mind of the hiring authority. If you go to a temp agency, go there every day. Show them that you are ready and willing to work. If you want to get hired at a fast food joint, go in once a week, around closing time. Help them clean up for free. Talk to the manager whenever you can. Take an application home and make copies of it. Whenever you go in, give them a new copy to keep yours on top. Those places pretty much just hire whoever was the last to come in. Also talk to some of your high school friends. What are they doing? Undoubtedly some of them are still working in fast food and other low-skill jobs. Ask them if they would recommend you to their boss. Talk to anyone you know on a personal professional, or academic level. I know it may not feel like a lot, but I'm sure there is at least one person you can talk to. Ask them if they've heard of any jobs. Talk to your garbage man, ask him if they're hiring, and where to apply. It's hard work but good money. Do you have a Liberty Tax in your area? They're all looking for sign wavers right now. Sure you have to dress up in that silly Statue of Liberty costume, but all you have to do is listen to your headphones and wave at passing cars. For that matter, go to real estate agencies, they like sign wavers too.

And if all else fails, grab some poster board, and write "LOOKING FOR HONEST WORK" and stand on a highway corner. It's not panhandling, because you don't want anyone to give you money, you're just out looking for a job.

thenumberone :

I occasionally get interviews, but I guess I don't stand out, in part becauae I won't lie like a son of a b****. I will embellish lightly, but I'm an honest man.

mrfe :

Trust me, when I go for interviews, I couldnt be more polite and personable. My real life persona is totally different from my internet one. I'm always as on my game as possible, but again they always go with experience.

Jordanv78 :

Only one, but I can't use her as a reference. I asked and she wouldnt put herself out there.

I rewrite my resume often, I can't change much without lying on it.

I've been to job fairs, generally speaking though, they want something else, and its only hurt my self esteem.

And I've done the test interview a million times. I'm told I do a decent job, and prospective employers sometimes do note I had a good interview. I just don't get the job.

Lazlo Falconi :

I don't think there are any factories here. My grandmother got laid off from one two years ago though.

As for supermarkets, I have 3 apps in at Market Basket in the past year, but they keep hiring older men and women. So I get the feeling they won't hire me for a while if ever.

And my grandmother has suggested the temp agency too. I could, but I would rather prefer something solid with set hours so I don't have to constantly sit on the phone waiting. In two years at the agency, dhe has had two total weeks of work. So its not a good track record.

I don't have any former high school friends really. I was really kind of public enemy #1. Besides that I live away from there now. The only people I know here are other unemployed bums. There are a lot of them. Only person I even know here with any work experience is my grandmother and she's tried helping.

legacyme3 : I'm sure you are, and I wasn't saying you weren't. I was just telling you what my dad looks for when he's hiring. Another idea: Look outside of your city. If there's a nearby city (I'm assuming moving isn't an option), try there. Chances are, someone's looking for a dude in his prime to move heavy boxes, or something like that. Try mail company's, ups, ect. If you've got some specific experience, try teaching it to others or something. Just throwing ideas out, but I bet you've thought of them already.

legacyme3 : A good thing to have is "Vector" training. Google Local Cutco Companies... it selling kitchen knives. Trust me... if you have that training, it is a whole lot easier to get a job. Just look into.

How is your attitude at interviews, and how often are you checking on whether or not your application is being considered?

And there is always the Army... do you have any college credits? If so, how many?
