I for one believe marching band is a sport. Seriously. You can't just give someone an instrument and expect them to be able to march and play, much less play correct notes and tones. Also, instruments are heavy enough to tire you out. Even the humble flute is tiring to hold. Percussion often has to march sideways and backwards with heavy instruments. Tuba players have been known to have to RUN to their spots. Sax players (like myself) have neck straps that support the weight of our instruments. Do you have any idea how much stress is put on our necks? Clarinets often have to play loudly all the time because they're so quiet. And all of this is just the physical aspect of it. We have to ask ourselves: What note is this? What keys do I press to get this note? Do I need to change how I'm holding the mouthpiece in my mouth? How loud should I play this note? What count and measure is this? Do I move? If so, where should I be going now? Am I in the correct place relative to everyone else? Am I on the right foot? Is my posture correct? ALL AT ONCE. Can just anyone do that? Doubt it!

TheFemaleCharlie : just because you move and play doesn't mean its a sport. I was a band geek all throughout middle school and high school, and I never considered it a sport, because the accepted definition of a sport doesn't really bring band into it.

No, I dont think it is. Unless you were to collide with another marching band to see who stays up the longest or falls down but can still be able to stay in tune.

And yes, I belive you it aint easy but I only see it as something of a pep thing. Same as cheerleaders. Who I dont see as atheletes either.

No it isn't the movement mixes with the music so its not only about moving in the right place but also being in key with each other in while playing.

TheFemaleCharlie :   Oh my God, Yes!!! We move, sweat, pour our hearts out to unappreciative audiences, travel, compete, get trophies. Anyone who disagrees and says we are nerds are just jerks that don't appreciate the good things in life. You'd actually be surprised to how many popular kids are in the band. There's quite a few and none of us are nerds. You'll know it when you see a band nerd. Those people purposely try to stay in step with anyone that is in front of them.

Jeez...ok, listen to this.  And listen closely, I'm not repeating myself for anyone.
First of all, servbot obviously doesn't know what a marching band is.  I play the trombone, and I am best in my section at that.  But when I learned that as a freshman (this year) that I would have to play the marching euphonium for marching band, I was shocked.  I had grown up on the slide, now I was facing the greatest musical and physical challenge in my LIFE...on an instrument that I had never even HEARD of!  Skip forward 5 months, and I am BEAST on that thing.  My high school played "Amazonia" for the show, which is EXTREMELY difficult, and the third movement is at a 140 double time marching tempo.  For anyone who is in marching band, you know how insane that is.  But, the show was the most fun I had in my life, and I am going through the training for section leader once the current one graduates.  However, as for the work, we had 5 months of 4 hours of practice a week, with 3-4 hour games.  We also had Competition, which took up 12-13 hours of my Saturday.  The band camp at the end of summer break was a full week of 13 hour days...of non stop marching and playing.  So, yes, marching band IS a sport, and if you don't think so, then well...I feel sorry for you.  Cuz you're gonna have thousands of marching band members on your heels.  We work as one.
Now...here's a little inside joke from my marching band.

Personally? No, I don't. Painting is an art form, and that requires alot of work. You don't see people calling painters atheletes... Just saying. Yes, it does have some physical work required, but not up to athelete standards. That's my opinion.

Yes. I have participated in many, and it always looks easy. But one simple mistake can really screw everyone over.

Going by a pure definition of sport: An athletic activity competitive in nature, I think marching band can be called a sport.

It doesn't pass the sniff test.  It's music while walking in precise movements.  So, if you consider military drill and flag corps a sport, than yes, marching band is a sport.

I don't think so.  It's artistic in design and meant to be visually and audiologically pleasing.  It's no sport to me.

I personally don't consider it a sport. Sure there are movements involved but I really don't see how that makes it a "Sport" No more than I see people dancing as a "sport" either and that's even more physically taxing.
