I do all the time, honestly. I choose to listen to mostly hard rock and stuff, mainly to get a rush-type of feeling and help hurry things up for me, Nya~.

Some examples are stuff like Guns N Roses, TNT, Led Zepplin, Van Halen, etc.

Depends on the actual game music... If it's something like Sonic 2 I don't play music in the background as the levels are short enough and it's not like any of the soundtracks suck that much... 

When I'm doing a speed run of other games though I do tend to play like fast, heavy music... Like Rise against. Or maybe some of the brony songs that are pretty insane... Either way they always have a high tempo and I feel as though it makes you more focused on the game... Unless you randomly start singing the vocals of course

I never use the game's music. It sounds so wrong, and weird, and distorted. I usually only use music during a video game playing if I am craving a certain song, and then I just let it go from there.

I pretty much never listen to outside music sources when playing games for any purpose. I just use the actual game's music. To listen to other music while playing basically means I need to mute the game sound entirely including the sound effects(except for in newer games that have separate SFX and BGM music sliders). This is a major no-no for me as I can't actually get the feeling for the game properly if there's no sound. I'm not sure why, but I need the in-game sound effects to be in a proper rhythm for playing... otherwise, my timing and everything is just off.

I've also done blind speed runs before too in which case the sound effects are the only feedback I have :p

I don't speedrun often, but when I do, I use the video game's music. Listening to the same video game music constantly, knowing when in a song (or how many loops through it) you finish a level helps you get a feel for whether you finished the level or found your boss fight faster or slower than normal without needing a timing program like WSplit, nice for games that don't have an in-game timer. Won't help you know exactly how much better or worse you're doing overall, though, unless you're speedrunning GTA3 or GTA:VC where the music patterns are consistent throughout the game (even if you use custom music).

I guess music can help. Usually fast music. Though i wouldn't listen to something I like a lot because I would just get distracted. When you play a game with great music anyway, music is not needed. For instance, wipEout. A game with such a good soundtrack no additional music is needed, though I don't think speed running that would be good because it is a racing game.
