Well, I'm going to have to choose a major next year. I'll be in 8th grade. That's right, I'll have to choose a major in the 8th grade. Well, I'm planning on majoring in computers, because I love them. I didn't realize that using Mac may mess up my learning. Well, what do you guys think? You guys know how much I love mac so...

i think it depends alot on what area of computers you are looking at, hardware, software, networking, programing, design, etc.
for most of them so long as you run a dual boot or at least a virtual operating system you should be ok with a mac, although if you want to go into a hardware section you would need to decide if you want to specialise in ibm or mac (or even both) based systems.
give me more specifics to work with

Well, I'd like to do what Dave does pretty much. Make websites and other stuff for money. At-home business. So, it'd be software.

I own a Mac and I also am in the same occupation David does. You like video and design right? Then Mac is perfect for you Only real problems that might occur are the classes your learning from. Most will be PC based but that isn't a big deal. I passed all my PC classes on a Mac. There's lots of companies out there that specilize in Mac based software so you won't have any problems really. If you looking into hardware though, either get a Mac Pro (which is very expensive but allows you to mod hardware) or just go with PC.

But yea, for now I wouldn't worry too much. Your in an experimentation stage which basically means that you will probably end up switching majors or maybe modifing your current major. At first I started out with a PC and wanted to be a photographer, then I got a Mac and became a web designer, then I wanted to become a graphic designer but then changed my mind and wanted to become a programmer lol.

Basically right now I'm a designer/programmer still in early stages, but when you are getting more advanced and want to pursue more advanced technologies is when the real difference between OS's comes in play. Get a Mac for now and when you graduate go from there because as I said before, stuff will change when it comes to what you want to do for a living.

If you want to get into game design or programming, definitely go with PC and stay away from Mac. However, if you simply just want to get into graphics and web design, a Mac is a perfect choice.

My skills range from web development, programming, graphic design, flash development and flash game design. The more skills, the more job opportunities and it's nice to have these skills because there are a lot of freelance work out there that allows you to work for yourself at home whenever you want and you determine how much you make based on how much you learn and based on how much freelance work you choose to do (and how quickly you do it).

I kinda disagree, Mac is a great area to get into games and programming think about it. Most iPhone developers make a ton off their games. When there is less support there are more opportunities available to become successful. Sure at first Mac had horrible support but many companies emerged and have become very successful off their Mac based software / inventions.

But that's it, the iPhone.

Majority of game developers use PC and not to mention that most computer games are made for PC and only work on PC. Much bigger market with PC gaming than Mac gaming and a larger audience. Additionally, the XNA studio (used to make PC games and Microsoft Xbox 360 games) can only ran on a PC.

And than we got Visual Studio C# and all the other amazing Visual Studio (programing) tools that are PC only.

And lets not forget that Mac's can't even handle Flash games very well.

VMWare Fusion and a new processor eliminate all those problems. If you run on a Power PC then yea flash support is bad but it's a discontinued processor so unless you have a Mac that's a few years old then it will be a problem. New macs have a better processor in them. Get VMWare fusion and any game, any program, works on Mac. VMWare fusion allows you to run Windows and Mac OS's at same time.

But it's inconvenient that you even have to buy another program to emulate PC stuff, you're better off just getting a PC than. And if you're working for a company, you probably wont get the choice of what computer you want, you use what they provide you which most likely would be a PC.

But hey, I'm not saying Mac's are bad, I'm just saying PC's have their pros and cons and Mac's have theirs also, it'd be ignorant to say one operating system is bad in every way and the other is perfect.

This thread is DEFINITELY teaching me a lot. I'd probably just use Boot Camp or Wine to emulate Windows if needed...

Randy: Well, if you took classes made for Windows while on Mac, that tells me that it won't really mess up anything...

Dave: I agree with the inconvenience. PowerPC(old Macs) are TERRIBLE. They aren't that good. However, Intel Macs are very good. More support(not as much as Windows). I do see your point...

Jigsaw: Yeah, PowerPC Macs do suck. Intel Macs are good. Totally agree with you.

When you said Randy, I think you mean Jigsaw. And Jigsaw didn't actually take any actual programing classes, just the basics and general education so his comment doesn't count.

Haha...yeah. I did mean Jigsaw lol. That's a bit offensive though, don't ya think? He did take classes made for Windows on a Mac.(I HATE IT when people say PC. Just because it's PC doesn't mean it's Windows! There ARE different PC OS's)

What's offensive about what I said? He isn't to far along with his schooling, I think he's only taken like 3 classes so far and I think he's dropping out of it anyway.

I wasn't talking about programming classes, rather classes in general. Most of them are Windows based and yes I had to find my own alternatives to software a few times. My comments should count, I'm probably the only one on here that has a Mac so I know it is running windows apps and also programming just not sure about windows based programming unless you are using something like VMWareFusion that's all. Not saying Windows blows I'm saying that if you need to use windows stuff on Mac you can with the help emulation software. I'm not saying Mac does everything Windows does and better I'm saying that most of the basic things are both Windows and Mac supported. But when you venture into more PC based stuff revolving around Windows programming then that is where it get's messy.

But yes I agree I do not know a damn thing about Windows programming I do know though that Macs allow you to program, just depends on what language your programming in. Perl, Python, Java, Applescript are a few languages on Mac. But yea if you want to do Windows programming then just go get a PC. If you are like me and like to experiment with both worlds get a Mac. As I said before, it really won't matter until your really into the subject your studying. If you decide you want to learn windows based programming then I agree with David get a PC but if you are unsure, then it won't make much difference that's why I recommend a Mac, for the time being until you decide your work will be mostly Windows or Mac based.

And yes that comment was a bit offensive since it basically said my opinion isn't worth anything just because I only took a few classes.

Sorry if you took it offensively but what I meant by my comment was that you didn't do any windows programing on your mac so you wouldn't know how well it goes. Languages like Java are fine with both Mac's and Windows PC's but for languages like C++ and C# (both used to develop games), you're best off using windows due to the development studio's used to handle those languages.

I could do Windows programming on Mac via emulators. But Macs not having the proper languages could be a problem...
As for programming, I'd have to have Windows programming. Most people use Windows. I'd really like to also know Mac coding(because I freakin' love Macs). But, because Windows is the main OS, I'd need to be able to code Windows.

You can still write those languages with any operating system but it's like probably literally 10 times better and faster to use Microsoft's development studio's to do so, especially since they give you the capabilities to do so much more with the languages. Also some programs you write with those languages can only run on Windows anyway.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
