So when I first got on I saw on my opening window page that the NRA Leader made a statement saying that the Connetect school shooting wouldn't have happened if armed cops were in the school.

This topic sound interesting: Should Armed cops be in Schools?

I know that some inner city schools have metal detectors, banned clothing, and search backpacks as a way to combat gang influence/warfare in schools. But I wanted to see what other people thought of this (aside from how arrogant the NRA Leader is.)

Oldschool41 : Interesting thought! That probably would have stopped the conneticut shooting! I can't say that I'd like Cops in my school, but if they saved my life, I'd be pretty happy. I'm kinda on the fence about this.

I guess we should put armed guards/police everywhere, since shootings don't just happen at schools.

I think, if they put armed police in schools it will immediately lower morale in students, making them not even feel safe to show up to school everyday.  However there is an idea by a friend of mine. In probably almost every school there is at least one teacher who may have an interest in security/police type work.  If they passed mental screening and firearms tests then maybe they should have access to a gun that would be locked safely somewhere at all time.  I'm not sure if I explained that well enough typing isn't a specialty of mine.

Putting armed guards in schools would just ruin the atmosphere of school itself, especially in a elementary/middle school. I mean, a shooting can happen at any time at any place by any person, so technically speaking we should put guards everywhere since pretty much no place is truly safe.

As much as I hate to say it...........s*** happens. Sure we can try to increase the safety of kids with armed cops, but will they(and their parents) really think they're safe?

Matias72 : That is another part of the article as he also cited that teachers should have been carrying weapons to fight back.

Matias72 : I like your idea! Of course, the weapon should be kept somewhere that no kid can get at. It wouldn't scare the kids, besides the effect that they already have on their students!

the costs and strain for the police force would be huge, less cops on the streets, intimidating for students, and as annette said, not just schools are attacked.

I get the initial justification, but the idea of arming teachers is, in reality, terrible.

The burn-out rate for most teachers is 2 years. Adding to their responsibilities the need to carry a weapon and also do the job of a soldier/cop will just deter people from going into the field. It's not the job of an educator to play soldier. If you want security in schools, divert funding from war, bring soldiers home, put money in education, and hire retired soldiers as security in schools.

Teachers are not soldiers. The argument for training isn't good enough.

Police officers go through extensive training, much of which involves managing focus in stressful situations (so you don't accidentally shoot a civilian) and NOT losing your gun in a struggle (something like 50% of police killed by guns are killed with their own guns in melee struggles).

Columbine High School had an armed officer that was assigned to the school. It obviously didn't stop that shooting from occurring.

Good points to Astynax never thought of it that way either, I don't know I'm on the fence again.

I'm going to be the Devi's advocate here and ask you all this...

If Armed Cops were in school, would you believe that the bullying level IN SCHOOL would go up, down, or the same?

Also inner city schools with huge gang problems install metal detectors, check bags, even conduct pat downs to stop guns and knifes from being brough in. Why wouldn't the same be applied to non-inner city schools?

Armed officers at schools, I think, isn't a good idea. Armed teachers is even the worst idea.  We aren't safe anywehere we go, so if you happen to see some armed officer, is that person good enough to trust. I think its jsut better to put metal detectors at every entrance, so that way they can just take a look at the person and check every single pocket for arms. I live in Denver, and I went to a school in a "ghetto" neighborhood, and every year there was a lockdown, but nothing ever happened. and every beginning of every semester, there will be metal detectors installed. There are at least 1 or 2 cops in school.
Now, with shootings at schools, movie theaters, malls, etc. you may never know if you are at the wrong place at the wrong time. I really think that all guns are gonna do is scare people, and kill even more innocent people. Why would teachers have guns for? I wouldnt trust a teacher that is mean and angry.  I have seen enough teahers that are just ready to kick a students a**. If the second amendment was never written down as a right, we wouldnt be watching every night on the news, "this person was killed, that person was murdered, a shooting at a mall, a great massacre....."  It's just horrible, but if people prefer to keep their guns and stuff, then whatever. But having a gun for security reasons? I prefer to beat up some guy with a metal baseball bat.

Arming teachers is a horrible idea, as I've discussed in a different thread.

Having one teacher with a gun won't help, because a gun in the safe would take too long to get to in order to be effective.

Armed guards, while a nice thought, won't really do much either since, as smotpoker pointed out, Columbine had one and it didn't do a lick of good.

All of these ideas are treating the symptom not the problem itself. The NRA is just trying to force us into a discussion on a meaningless solution. Their leadership is so blinded to reality by their ideology that they are incapable of even discussing actual solutions.

I think that schools should hire police officers to come in the schools in shifts. Arming teachers is not really a good idea in my opinion. A cop would be a better choice, since they are more experienced anyway.

Oldschool41 : it would suck having them there all the time but yes I think it would be a good precaution and definitely make people think twice about shooting up others in school
