So after I got married, I developed an unhealthy lifestyle. I don't weight 300 pounds, but I am totally out of shape, I eat junk food all the time, and I hardly exercise.  Needless to say, I've gotten some substantial flab about the gut.  I weighed 140 pounds 4.5 years ago and I know weigh between 160 and 170.  I'd like to lose the flab.

The only problem is that I always stay resolved for only a short amount of time.  I'll start out every year with a "I'm going to do at LEAST 30 minutes on the treadmill every day before I go to work."  I start off doing well, and then five or six weeks into the school year (sometimes less), I get too busy.  It's not that I -couldn't- make time, but that I feel pressured by all my duties and choose not to stress myself out.

I really, really, really want to get back into the habit, but I just.... keep NOT doing it.  I'm crazy busy for the next week (end of term exams to give and grade), but I'd like to begin forming the habit of exercising first thing in the morning.  (This, of course would mean actually GETTING UP with my 5am alarm instead of ignoring it and rolling over.  Something else I need to change.)

So what would I adore for Christmas?  Starting on the 24th, I'd love to use this thread as an accountability thread.  One or more people, supporting each other and checking in on them.  You can ask if I've kept my resolve, and I can do the same.  This would require honesty, understanding, and a drive to help motivate each other.  As silly as it sounds, accountability partners really do help the psych with handling things and getting things done (sort of in the way peer pressure works.)

Is anyone willing to do this?  I'd be willing to help, and I'd like to get help.

I don't like treadmills. They can get boring when you aren't going anywhere. I tried running on them when I was a cross country runner, but I found out how bad they are for your knees because you stomp harder on treadmills. Besides. Treadmills do most of the work for you. Walking is good exercise when your legs are pushing yourself forward.  But treadmills take away the pushing/pulling that is required in walking.

My advice to you is to walk outside instead of the treadmill. If you have a dog, that makes it easier to motivate you. If you don't have a dog, do you have a friend who has one? See if they are willing to let you walk their dog for 30 minutes 3-4 days a week. If you don't charge them, and tell you it is to help you exercise, you are doing them a favor. Don't start off doing it everyday. Give yourself days that you don't have to do it. When you don't have those days, it becomes more and more of a chore. Work up to doing it more often after you have been doing it for just 3-4 days a week for a while.

rcarter2 :  Well, I don't only do the treadmill; that was just my main example.  I actually like to focus more on things like walking lunges, jumping squats, chair dips, push ups, and sit ups.  I'm more concerned about being fit than losing weight, and I feel very unhealthy.

As for your suggestions, I appreciate them and agree with them.  There are just a few problems...
A:  I have no real life friends.  Literally.  None.  Zippo.  The only acquaintances I have are co-workers, and we rarely interact and they live far away.
B:  If walking was an option, I'd spend ALL my non- working hours walking outside, trust me.  LOL I also happen to live in the 3rd - 11th most dangerous city in the country (depends on which source you look at) and so my husband does not want me outside for obvious reasons.  Just two days ago, actually, there was a robbery and shooting next door.

Ah. I see. Well, you could always pack heat No, don't do that. Maybe this thread will be what you need. But does it have to be early in the morning? Would it be possible to do this when you get home? Although I get being tired after school.

My wife decided to get a fitness program game for our wii. That is helping her a bit. She has a hard time with motivation too. You told me your husband has a modern day console. There are fitness games for all the current ones. Maybe look into that.

rcarter2 :  Haha.... I don't even know if carrying a gun would help me, since I'd have to learn to use it first.    (I know you were kidding.  Thanks for giving me a chuckle.  LOL)

I do hope someone will take it up, because I'm being terrible about it myself.  The reason I do it early is for exactly the reason you said.  Most of the time I feel emotionally drained when I get home, and my feet are usually killing me because I've been in heels all day.  Not to mention I don't eat lunch, so I just wan to sit down and have dinner by the time 3:45 rolls around.  Hehe.

I've considered trying it after work though, but I think I'd be even less motivated.  I do it so EARLY because I'm a morning person and I leave for work at 6:45 to do morning tutoring.  So getting up at five would allow me to exercise, shower, iron my clothes, write a lesson plan or grade some work, pack all my stuff, and walk to work.  Exercising is actually THE reason my alarm is set at 5, but I always just roll over and tell myself I'll get up to exercise the next morning.

My husband does have an XBox 360 and Kinect. A game came with the Kinect portion.  (LOL, I just had to ask him what all that stuff was called... how embarrassing!)  I've always thought those games were just a bunch of hooey though.  Do you have any suggestions for games that really would help you get into shape and even cause you to break a sweat?

I still want one or more accountability partners, but maybe this could help me too, and I can ask for it as a Christmas present.

Sounds good. I have an ab workout routine that I do, and diet I follow, but I've recently spent some time at a friend's house, and found it hard to stick to any of my routines or my diet. As a result I'm not toning up nearly as fast as I was. I'm leaving here tomorrow or Sunday, and I'll be resuming the program. Count me in.

Take up martial arts if you can. I've been studying/practicing since I was 14 so this has always kept me in shape mentally and physically, although I dunno if that sounds practical at 25 as well as teaching a high school class, lol...

Eirinn :  Thanks, I really appreciate it.  ^.^

tRIUNE :  for scheduling reasons?  LOL  Aren't martial arts lessons really expensive though?  I'm scared to do anything like it though, because I'm also a horrible clutz.  I have the grace of a flopping fish.

Yeah basically scheduling reasons, I think it's perfect for fitness if you have the time.

Some can be expensive, some not... if you have time I was putting the thought out there.

I had no skills starting out, but with lessons/time you gain mental/physical skills which will be an effective fitness program.

Hmm. I would say that if you TRUELY want to lose weight, then the movtivation to lose the weight should outweigh the tendency to slack off. Here are some tips...

1. Monitor what your eating- Check serving sizes, calories per fat, and other unhealthy stuff. Try to eat more veggies, fruits, and protein rich foods.

2. Plan a chart- Making a chart of what exercises your going to do will help you keep organized and make it easier for you to track what exercise you want to do today.

3. Rest your body- If your going pushing your body to the limits with some exercise, make sure that you rest your body the next day so it can rest. You can use this time to do other exercises that target different body parts.

4. Buy a weight bench/weights- They don't cost much for some of the lesser 5 lbs weights. Also buy getting a weight bench, a bar, and some free weights; you'll get a wider range of exercise routines.

5. Don't get discouraged if the weight loss isn't showing- You not going to shed pounds overnight, so don't give up if you find its going to slow. Weight loss is like marriage. If you don't want to commit, then don't bother doing it.

If you want to you can buy Fitness DVDs to help you out, but I don't find them all that interesting and is kind of a huge waste of money...unless its P90X.

Pretty much follow this and know what works for you and what doesn't and you should get healthy in a couple of months. Good luck!!

Oldschool41 :   On food:  I try, but a limited budget, opposing schedules, and my inability to cook.... well it's very hard to eat healthy.  I want to make an effort towards that as well.  The easiest thing I can do is quit my addiction to energy drinks and soda.  My aim is to have water all week, and I brought a large cup with me to work today!

I actually did have a chart at the beginning of this year.  I kept track of what I ate, which exercises I did (and how many or for how long), and various other things.  As I got further and further behind with it, I ended up giving up on it completely. Perhaps I just need to make and print a schedule, and then place check marks on whatever I successfully completed.

I have a few small weights (hand and ankle).  I'm a bit afraid of using the ankle ones though because I have ankles that crack at EVERY step.  They have my whole life, and in fact they crack much much louder than any person's ankles I've ever heard.  It creeps my relatives out because it happens with every step. I don't know if it's a sign of something bad or not, but I worry about stressing my ankles.

Any reason you find P90X worth the money as opposed to all others?

Thanks for the advice, to everyone.

Eirinn :
And anyone else that wants to participate:

My goal is to start this weekend. I'm going to aim for at LEAST 30 minutes of light jogging and walking on the treadmill, 200 lunges, 30 chair dips, 5 push ups (I really can't do them....), and 25 sit ups.  This will be spread throughout the day.  I also plan on taking an hour long walk if it's not too cold.

Anyone want to do the same exercises on Saturday?    I'll cheer you on and check up on ya.

I'm willing to commit to a specific shared routine, though I'm geared more toward ab workouts than anything at the moment, so I imagine I'll probably throw in some extras in that area. Do you happen to have an android powered device? If so I have some apps I can recommend. They're really helpful in fitness training.
I'm actually rather excited at the idea of having others get in on this. I've already become somewhat of a personal trainer (far from professional, mind you) for my sister. It really helps a lot to have others join in on these things.

Eirinn :   It does help to have others to encourage and participate with, yes.  ^.^
mrfe :
Did say he was considering it.

I don't have an android though.    I have old, useless technology.  I don't know any ab workouts so I'll stick with what I have for now at least. lol

Instead I doing more than you are doing right now maybe you can change how you do the things you do now. For expel do you drive to school everyday? If the school isn't far away (I known some teachers don't live in the same town as the school) maybe you can walk there. Or maybe park your car a few blocks away from where you are going then once you leave that place walk back. Another thing you can do is set an alarm clock or something to as loud as it goes then it will wake you up sand make sure you do your exercise. Another fun thing you can do is for every candy you eat you give somebody a dollar or something like that.

I would love to be part of this!! I was thinking about joining some random diet/exercise website just to get motivation but you have made things simple!
I've been putting on weight... my jeans are fitting not like they should. I am starting to fit in my size 7 jeans, when a few weeks ago I was a 5. T.T
Which is why I wanted to start to exercise and dieting again.
Break is after this week, that's a perfect time to focus on getting fit!
Like some have said before... I think p90x is wonderful and you should try that! xD
If you can't buy it there is always videos on youtube and such, or you could be a pirate and torrent it. ;'P
P90X comes with 12 videos. The awesome ones are  Plylometrics, cardio, and ab ripper because they burn the flab in no time!! :O
I suck at just doing random exercise on my own which is why I need to be watching fitness videos so I would, again, recommend P90X. If you have time... this lady... her workouts... they are amazing!!! http://www.youtube.com/user/blogilates?feature=watch

Oh yeah! You said you didn't eat lunch! Bad!!! >.<
You have to eat... eat, eat, eat,eat aaaa loootttt. Not junk food or fatty foods but fruits and raw vegetables and healthy meals.   You have probably heard this before but not eating can result in your body going into starvation mode which will make losing flab more difficult.
"The easiest thing I can do is quit my addiction to energy drinks and soda.  My aim is to have water all week, and I brought a large cup with me to work today!''
If your addiction to energy drinks and soda is bad, try not to over push it by drinking too much water since you might go trough withdraws and that will most likely affect your ability to focus on getting fit. I would suggest you drink half the amount of the energydrinks/soda you drink a day while still drinking at least 3 bottles of waters. Slowly cut down on sugar drinks until your body doesn't crave them anymore.

You are all, so.. so.. SO awesome!  I'm really, really excited about this!

I did just think of something though:
I have really strong legs and spend all summer doing walking lunges, so.... to make our aim 200 might be a little overbearing.  (if you plan on doing the same exercises I will be doing.)  So I decided to edit the numbers:

at LEAST 30 minutes of light jogging and walking on the treadmill
50 lunges
30 chair dips
5 push ups
25 sit ups
Hour long walk.

These will be spread out as needed during the day.  If you can do more, fantastic!!!!!
I'm also going to drink lots of water.  ^.^

Also,
earthwarrior:
Thank you for the lovely advice.    I actually do walk to work because I live right across the street, and my alarms ARE at their highest.  Not to mention I have two of them. LOL

I did really like the candy and sweet rule though.  Haha!

Resuri:
I loved your post, and I'll definitely look through those videos!
My husband did buy us some kind of exercise kit thing, but I don't think it was P90x and we have to clear out the spare bedroom for it.  (Which could be months).  I don't have energy drinks ALL that often, but when I get stressed (like the past two weeks), I have about one a day or every other day.  It's awful!  Otherwise, I usually avoid them.

Your advice about piecemealing it was good though. I'll do that, and thanks!

Singelli : Sorry I haven't replied yet.

In 12th grade, my gym class did P90X for a couple of weeks.

Its brutal, I'm not going to lie. But it works, I saw some small results when doing it in the time period. But you would definetly want to build up your stamina and endurance before you do it.

From what you've posted resently it sounds like a good mix of exercises. I would say that if you have a bicycle or a bicycle machine that you can use that on some days when you don't feel like walking (I know I do at least 2 hours on my bike machine; burn a lot of calories). Maybe add more pushups as it seems a little odd that your second lowest is 25. Try to find a substitute exercise of push-ups to help make up.
