I think Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal is better than Michael Jackson's version.

What music do you think is better the second or third time around?

I think Megadeth's cover of Sex Pistols' classic, "Anarchy in the UK" is freakin' awesome.

I think Limp Biskit's version of The Who's original Behind Blue Eyes is an improvement mainly because of the changes to the bridge that Limp Biskit made
While the "Speak and Spell" voice just spells out  L-I-M-P  B-I-S-K-I-T letter by letter, I am of the opinion that it is more in keeping with the feel of the main chorus-verse-chorus-verse part of the song rather than the incongruous bridge of the original with it's even more bizarrely incongruous lyrics which seem to bear no relation to the rest of the song at all

I agree with you, warmaker. Alien Ant Farm's version of Smooth Criminal is a lot better than the original song, and the original song was a masterpiece. They did an amazing job remaking that song and an even better spoofing Michael Jackson in the music video.

I agree that Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal was awesome....

But I thought that 2Cello's version was so good. I know it was on Glee, blah blah blah, but it was amazingly awesome and I actually prefer it to both of the other versions (but I still love them too).

I must be the only person who DIDN'T like Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal Cover... though at least it wasn't the disaster that was Chris Cornell's cover of Billie Jean.

I don't like most covers of Jackson songs to be honest... they just end up feeling awkward.

But that's not what this thread is about! So which covers DO I like?

I like Sugar Ray's version of Abracadabra better than Steve Miller Band's.
I also like Evanescence's cover of Korn's Thoughtless (I think that was the song) better than its original.

Also if you want an awesome cover of Smooth Criminal, check out this...

Practically anything on the Punk goes Pop albums are better than the originals, but if I had to choose which cover song I have ever heard that was better than the original would probably have to be Rob Zombie's cover of Brickhouse 2003. I had gotten the Rob Zombie Past Present and Future album a little after I seen him about two years ago at Mayhem fest, and noticed the track listened to it and laughed so hard because it was so unexpected. XD

Pillar's cover of Collective soul's Heaven Let Your Light Shine Down. I loved that song (Heard it by Pillar first). Then I heard it by Collective Soul and was shocked. I wouldn't have sat through the whole song if it were up to me. lol

Destifen : Really? I love the contrast in the Who's version that I find is lacking in the Limp. But it is a good version.

Remakes I like more:

  • Hurt - Johnny Cash (Originally Nine Inch Nails) - One of his last recordings after he life long wife died, and just before he did.

  • Can't hurry love - Phil Collins (Originally The Supremes) - Though the original is almost as good.

Light Knight : Yes it seems to me that they were in the studio recording it and someone from the record company said:
"This doesn't sound like a Who record, you need to put in a segment of music to let everyone know it's the who"
It sounds like it was written and done on the spot
Especially those truly dreadful lyrics, they sound like less than two minutes was spent on them

Back on topic, I really like U2's version of "One" which was originally done by Johnny Cash
I think they are both excellent versions, rather than one being better than the other

I do prefer Travis' cover version of Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" that they performed live at Glastonbury Festival in the year 2000

Well that depends On the song and the band, ok for example take the song, The man who sold the world, in 1970 the song was written  by David Bowie and that was ok for the 1970's until Kurt cobain and nirvana got a hold of David's song & play  it at the Nirvana's 1994 unplugged. Kurt took "The man who sold the world" to greater heights further then Bowie could have dream.. At least that is my take on this topic..

The Megas' cover of "Sunglasses at Night" is definitely much better than the original IMO.

I also prefer their cover of "Send me an Angel" compared to the original, Nya~.

I'm a believer by Smash Mouth would have to be a decent remake made by the monkeys ages ago. They both sound fairly the same, with Smash Mouth being more modern.

In electronic dance music a lot of remakes (remixes) are better than the originals, such as:
The Catz 'n'Dogz remix of Aundy by Claude Vonstroke,
The Crazy P remix of Nighttime by Greg Paulus,
And the Paco Osuna remix of Train to Balitmore by Ambivalent.
