Are you talking about music sequencers and trackers? The only one I know of that's free is DefleMask. Apparently, it's possible to not only write traditional MOD tracks, but also write stuff for classic consoles, like the Sega Genesis and NES.

As far as making music software goes I've been quite fond of FL Studio and Reason.
I've heard tons of Mac owners saying Garage Band is the best "making music software" program but I have yet to try it out or see it./www.buygw2golds.com

I agree, FL Studio is excellent for making music, you can use samples provided with the program, download others or make your own by plugging in instruments to your laptop/PC

I used FL Studios Producers Edition a few times, I'm interested in it, but I have no instruments or knowledge of using it, so it helps me learn as I eventually toy around with it making things sound better gradually.

I tend to use Anvil Studio to sequence midis (I've yet to see a free program that works better or gives more options/flexibility).

If I need to make something better than midi, I use soundfonts and synthesize it to a mp3. I've been able to make some really cool stuff this way at times.

I got all kinds of programs. The three I use the most are Reason, FL Studios (formerly Fruity Loops) and Pro Tools. I managed to get the Student Edition of a later recently due to mom having a college email address.
