We can take 2 routes with this game, I'll post both routes with each segment of my post.

Main Characters
IDEA 1
Player 1 is Pokemon trainer Ash Ketchum and Player 2 is Pokemon Trainer Brock. Instead of Flower Power, you get a bag of Pokeballs and you throw Pokeballs instead of Fire Balls.

IDEA 2
Player 1 & Player 2 are Both Pichu's (or 2nd player can be an equally popular Pokemon which can have a power similar to mario's flower power). Starting out small, your Pichu and instead of getting mushrooms, you get maybe a Lightning Stone which makes you big (aka evolve) and when you evolve, you evolve into Pikachu. Not sure what the Flower Power graphic would be yet but getting it lets you throw lightning bolts and you become Riachu.

for the pokemon we use to replace previous game enemies, we'll want to pick ones that fit the role and are well known if possible
Koopa Troopa: Squirtle
Para Koopa Troopa: Warturtle
Goomba: Bulbasaur or Muk or Oddish
Blooper (squid): Seadra or Tenacool or Tenacruel
Cheep-Cheep: Goldeen or Seaking
Buzzy Beetle (black hard shell guy): Kabuto
Hammer Bro(and his hammers): Mankey or Primeape throwing rocks OR cubone or marrowak throwing bones

Level Ideas
What we could is give each level it's own theme. There's 4 levels in each world so basically every world would have 1 of these theme based levels:

GRASS/BUG LEVEL: 1st level of each World would have Grass Type Pokemon and Bug Type Pokemon. Graphics more green with a more grassy look with lots of plants.
Pokemon: Bulbasaur

ELECTRIC/NEUTRAL LEVEL: This is basically a level that you're maybe in a town or maybe on the outskirts of the town. Pokemon on this level would basically be neutral Pokemon and Electric.

WATER/AIR LEVEL: Every other level this would be underwater which would be Water Pokemon. The other every other level would be a level where you're above water but maybe some Pokemon can jump out of it at you and could possibly add a flying pokemon to this level too.
Pokemon: Squirtle

FIRE/ROCK LEVEL: 4th level of each World would have Fire Type Pokemon and Rock Type Pokemon. Graphics would be have a lava, fire and rock feel to it and of course this would be the Boss level of each world with Charizard as the Boss in every World (due to sprite limitation). Graphics more Red, Gray and Black.

Level Graphic Ideas
Pipes = Plant Pots (though they wouldn't make many appearances).
Castle at end of level = Some sort of PokeCenter

Main Ground = ???
Castle Ground = ???

Notes:
I'd like to keep the Pokemon used in this game down to the original 150, more people recognize them which means the game would appear to more people. We could always make a sequel later expanding to the other Pokemon.

Cant wait We need someone to work on scripting, events(if any), so on... unless you're doing that David.

I'm the graphic artist, so I will draw the people and do all the art and maybe even the maps.

Yes I'll do everything except the character graphics.

Edit: Also,I was thinking Kabuto for Buzzy Beetle, Spearow for Paratroopa, and Venusaur or someone for Bullet Bill Shooter shooting leaves or something which would be Bullet Bill.

Probably someone to gather the sprites. It's my guess.

That seems more like my job because I'm the one recreating them to work in the game and everything.

Edit: We might need someone to gather sprites and everything though... Someone to do everything we don't do I suppose.

Edit: Wait I found a great place for sprites! The thing I mostly need are the hacking tools. If someone could find some I'd be thankful.

in idea 2 the flower pick up should be a thunder stone becuase that is what makes pikachu evolve into riachu

That should be the mushroom, because that makes Mario grow. For the flower we don't know what to use.

but wouldnt you start out at your smallest form pichu then you would get a rarecandy ( mushroom ) which would turn you into pikachu then you would get a thunderstone ( flower ) which would turn you into riachu which would alow you to shoot thunder bolts you see what I mean

For the second idea, I think the main characters should be starters from a certain generation (we could take a vote on which one) plus pikachu

I suppose we could do that. I was thinking we need some legendaries... any suggestions on how we can fit them in?

one way you could fit legendaries in it by making a secert level or area and mewtwo could be the boss for it or you could make him the games super boss

awesome and also you should make the pirahana plants diglets and/or dugdrios also for bullet bill you could use blastoise and the bullets would be water

Yeah, actually rocks are better than dirt and dirt wouldn't really do much damage.
