How did you get into computer coding? Was it an accident or deliberate because you were seeking something. Was it just because you were bored? For me, I wanted to learn coding so that I could make my own stuff - because it seemed that nobody ever had anything that I actually wanted. So I started learning out to code so I could make everything the way I want. Best way to, right?

What kind of languages do you know? I wouldn't say I know any, but I'm pretty much a master of XHTML and CSS2. I still don't know all of the fancy new features of CSS3, but I do love working with it. I'm not entirely sold on HTML5 yet, though. I think it has great potential, but it's not quite there yet, I'll stick with XHTML 1.1-STRICT for now.

Erm, Wait I got a little off-topic. I first learned HTML 3.5 (Or something like that) when I was 12 or 13. My uncle had an online business during the height of the dot-com boom, and he showed it to me and I though it was incredible. At the time I knew very little about the Internet, but it blew me away and I knew I had to be a part of it. So he gave me a book teaching HTML. I read it front to back and spent hours a day from when I was about 13 through 15 making websites, and editing my silly little Geocities site in Notepad. It was really awful, and I'm glad it no longer exists!

As I grew, I wanted to learn more, but I sort of fell out of making websites, being unable to afford a real host, but not wanting to squander my talents on free sites like Geocities and Freewebs. Now I'm really into it again, and working on learning PHP. I already know quite a bit, but most of it is pretty hack-ish and more useful for saving time writing regular XHTML than for making dynamic pages.

But other than that, I don't know any real programming languages. I kind of get python, but I don't really know how to do much beyond printing Hello World.

Ah, I'm really still basic learning. But I know HTML pretty decently. I mean, I understand it anyhow. Still working on memorizing the individual bits of code and what they do though. ^.^; And I've started working on learning CSS. I know basic external CSS well enough but I don't understand how to do inline CSS yet. And again, still memorizing what each piece does.

I guess I was mostly bored and I tend to work on my own little projects in whatever when I'm bored. I'm also the kinda person that goes out and makes something that doesn't exist when I feel it should exist so that sometimes requires me to figure out how to do coding and stuff.

I never got into computer coding i really don't know what it is. If somebody out there is willing to explain it to me i can probably figure out if im perticipating in computer coding.

Ktanaqui : Oh well if you have any questions, feel free to ask me! Also in-line CSS is extremely easy. It's actually a lot more simple than external CSS, basically instead of doing
in your HTML document, and then
.derp {
color: #f00;
}
in your CSS document, you could just do
. It's basically exactly the same as what goes between your curly braces on the external document goes right into the style="" flag.

Crazy Li : Oh you're a real programmer, then? What sort of languages do you use?

mr.keys : Computer coding would be anything where you have to write code in order to make the computer to do something... this can range from writing HTML code for web pages to making full-on programs/applications.

Lazlo Falconi : I "real" programmer? Hardly... I'm just someone who dabbles in a little bit of everything out of boredom.

I do HTML, CSS, PHP, a tiny bit of Javascript, and even less ColdFusion. I also know enough SQL to do basic database queries and whatnot to store/retrieve data in mySQL databases.

I also had to learn the languages of RGSS (a Ruby variant) for RPG Maker XP game making... and GML for making games in GameMaker. I don't truly know either of those... but I apply programming basics to them to accomplish simple stuff that every language uses and Google the exact syntax I need.

mr.keys : I would say that yes, it is hard... unless your brain is wired towards logical thinking. But there's a lot of memorization involved. You hafta remember how to type the code for what you want to do and at first glance, it's all a bunch of gibberish.

Like this is just pseudocode as an example:

Start

Read Student_Marks_File
Pass = 0
Fail = 0
Total = 0
X = 0
while (End Of Student_Marks_File) do

Total = Total + Subject_Marks

if (Subject_Marks > 40) then

Print "Student passed in" Subject

else

Print "Student failed in" Subject

endif
X = X +1
Read Next Record

endwhile
Average = Total/X
Print "Average Marks of" Student_Name "are" Average

Stop

Lazlo Falconi :

When it is explained that way, it makes a heck of a lot more sense than the gibberish that I thought I was looking at before. I just have to work on memorizing the codes now. Basically, I can do it but it takes time because I'm still working on making it a second nature type of thing.

Lazlo Falconi :
Ktanaqui :

in-line CSS is probably the best way to go for beginners, but it can get very cluttered if you're working with a large number of pages that need CSS formatting. You don't want to throw too much into your HTML like that if it needs heavy styling especially if you're reusing the same styling across multiple pages. It's better to use an external style sheet in this case because then you can just put all your CSS in the file once and reference it as needed on multiple pages in short statements that don't clutter your code.

Ah, got it. I'll do my best to remember that little fact. I think I'll be using CSS a lot more now that I know how to inline the little sucker. I needed it for another site project that I'm working on XD

I'm a computer science major, so writing programs is something I do for school. I had done a little bit before starting college, but that was just because my brother was a computer science major and I wanted to see if it was something I'd be interested in. Most everything I've written has been incredibly simple and isn't really worth talking about, though.

I've also been writing a few Prolog programs. While it's not very practical (not what I've done, at least), it is pretty cool. Basically it's like when I was writing code in MIPS. I enjoy doing it for the experience, but at the end of the day it's kind of a waste of a class for me.

soxfan849 :

Well, I personally believe that since you did go through the effort to write it, it is worth talking about. Or at least mentioning. Just because it's not "big" doesn't mean that you need to go unnoticed for it.
