Still havnt seen it, but I dont really go to cinemas.

Elara: One of the books I was thinking about is "Best Destiny".
From the book jacket:
As James T. Kirk prepares to retire from a long and illustrious Starfleet career, events in a distant part of the Federation draw him back to a part of the galaxy he had last visited as a young man--a mysterious world called Faramond whose name takes Kirk on a journey back to his youth.
At sixteen, Kirk is troubled, estranged from his father and has a bleak future. However, a trip into space with Kirk's father George and Starfleet legend Captain Robert April changes James' life forever, when a simple voyage aboard the USS Enterprise becomes a deadly trap. Soon, Kirk and father find themselves fighting a vicious and powerful enemy.
Before the voyage ends, father and son will face life and death together, and James T. Kirk will get a glimpse of the future and his own best destiny.

The book "Final Frontier" is a prequel to this one.

All in all this new movie isnt in the prime universe so the events cant really count as canon.
Alternate timelines. Making things more and more muddled. Sigh.

well, I have since watched the original 6 movies and while they aren't exactly the most exciting movies I understand why some people didn't like this new one. It is quite different. Basically it is just catering to the new generation that can't stand more than 45 seconds of plot or character development. Instead we watch movies about characters we already know and then criticize how wrong they got it

I did like the movie, but the original 6 movies are better in their own ways.

I didn't like the movie at all. I've never watched any previous Star Trek episodes and I didn't understand anything in this movie. Also too many action scenes!

I thouht this star trek film was great, I like every thing about it, except that the engine room look like inside a power station, that was the only let down about the film for me. I am looking forward to owning this film on Dvd in November.

I thought it was a pretty good movie, I went to see it in the theater with my dad and my brother. My dad who grew up on the original series loved it, said it did a great job of capturing the nostalgic factor for him. As the biggest Star Trek fan in the house, I really liked it as well.

However, I think they could have explained Spock's and Uhara's relationship better. For people unfamiliar with the series it might come across that she's trying to suck up to the captain in a certain scene, not realizing its not the case.

The camera work was dodgey and shakey, the plot was virtually non existant and a fair few events seemed forced, like they were just in there to try and placate the fans.
It was as I expected it to be, an action movie with the Star Trek logo plastered on it.
Mediocre at best, even taking into consideration that it was an alternate universe plotline.
I have watched and enjoyed alot of Star Trek, but I will call a crappy movie crappy if it is, even if it has the brand name I normally enjoy.
