I wasn't refering to just that verse. Look at my examples and more from the Bible.

Heres the examples and the passages they are taken from:

Earth is suspended into space: Job 26:7
Job 26:7 - He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.

The universe is running down: Isa. 51:6
Isa. 51:6 - Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fail.

Earth is a sphere: Isa. 40:22
Isa. 40:22 - He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

Ocean currents flow through the sea: Ps. 8:8
Ps. 8:8 - the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.

The universe is made up of invisible things: Hebrews 11:3
Hebrews 11:3 - By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

Stars produce sound: Job 38:7
Job 38:7 - while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

The stars cannot be numbered: Genesis 15:5, 22:17; Jeremiah 31:37, 33:22
Genesis 15:5 - He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars—if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
Genesis 22:17 - I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,
Jeremiah 31:37 - This is what the LORD says: "Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below be searched out will I reject all the descendants of Israel because of all they have done," declares the LORD.
Jeremiah 33:22 - I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars of the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.' "

Stars are incredibly distant from the earth: Job 22:12
Job 22:12 - "Is not God in the heights of heaven? And see how lofty are the highest stars!

Stars differ in magnitude: 1 Corinthians 15:41
1 Corinthians 15:41 - The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.

Earth rotates on its axis: Job 38:12, 14; Luke 17:31, 34
Job 38:12 - "Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place,
Job 38:14 - The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment.
Luke 17:31 - On that day no one who is on the roof of his house, with his goods inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.
Luke 17:34 - I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.

Man's body is composed of the same materials as the earth: Genesis 2:8, 3:19; Psalms 103:14
Genesis 2:8 - Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.
Genesis 3:19 - By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return."
Psalms 103:14 - for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.

The universe suddenly appeared out of nothing: Genesis 1:1; Psalms 33:6, 9
Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Psalms 33:6 - By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
Psalms 33:9 - For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.

Earth's crust rests upon a foundation: Job 38:4, 6; Psalms 104:5
Job 38:4 - "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand.
Job 38:6 - On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone-
Psalms 104:5 - He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.

As you can see, some of these can be slightly taken as saying the things, some its a stretch, and others, to paraphrase geeogree, "have no bearing in science".
Some of them are not statements but are questions, others are parts of other sentences, some of those are just ways of saying things, not to be taken literaly, and others are in there for poetic beauty.

For poetic beauty? Everything in the Bible is there for a reason, not just to add some poetic value. Alot of them have scientific truths in them. Those arenot the only ones in the Bible though, there are hundreds more, and to say all of that is coincidence, once again, is illogical.

To be honest Noodles, you're reaching for something that's not there. I agree with DM. The bible is a great guide to religion, not science.

It's not there? Really? There isn't science in the Bible... well it seems like you people aren't taking what I have to say seriously, and going for what the majority has to say...

Now you're just making things up. I never said that there wasn't science in the bible. Just that it isn't the guide to science. Also, I'm an independent thinker. I have a mind of my own and I don't need people to think for me. Nice assumption.

Personally I could care less what the majority have to say.
I just say what I think really.
I think that when it comes to imterpretations you can always make one thing sound like another even if its not true.
I think that if one wrote a book about the world around them, like the bible, you would obviously get things written there that can be interpreted into fact.
I think poetic value IS a reason to have something written down.

I think you can't take half a sentence and give it a meaning when the rest of the sentence could be entirely out of context.

yeah, I think I'm with DH and Rasen.... it's not that we don't think there is any science in the Bible.... but that you seem to be giving more meaning to a lot of these verses than I think was ever intended.

I also agree that everything is in the Bible for a reason.... doesn't mean that reason has anything to do with God.

"To be honest Noodles, you're reaching for something that's not there. I agree with DM. The bible is a great guide to religion, not science."

Sounds like you're saying science is not there... my mistake I suppose. It isn't a guide to religion, but how to live life and everything about life.

"Now you're just making things up. I never said that there wasn't science in the bible. Just that it isn't the guide to science. Also, I'm an independent thinker. I have a mind of my own and I don't need people to think for me. Nice assumption."

I wasn't making things up, you can't guess someones intentions unless you know them very well.
The Bible is a guide to life, and that includes science. Science is a huge part of life. It isn't a guide to religion, but how to live life and everything about life.
The Bible, like you said, is a guide, it doesn't think for you, it leads you in the right direction.

DH:

They weren't writing about the world around them, they were writing what God told them to write.
By poetic value, I was talking about unnecessary words to add some kind of beauty that had no significance to what the Bible was saying.

geeogree:

Look at most of them though, whether I interpreted them correctly or not, they definately have scientific value beyond what people knew about at the time.
What do you mean that reason doesn't have to do with God.

Science does tell how to live life nor everything about life. It does say a lot about life and such, but it doesn't say how to live life. You just said yourself that that the bible isn't the guide to science. You just said yourself that the bible isn't the guide to science, it just includes science.

I said it was a guide on how to live life and things about life, I didn't say it wasn't also a guide to science. It is very scientific, and tells us about the world around us and how it works. It tells us about the sciences of the earth.

I never said that you said it was only a guide to science... I'm only pointing out your inconsistency in denying that you in fact have said that it is a guide to science.

And I don't think it is a very useful guide to science anymore. Most scientific research is in things that are way beyond the knowledge given in the Bible. I admit all those verses can be viewed as of right now to contain scientific perspective... but go back 1000 years and tell me how many of things were understood and how you could use those verses back then to better understand the world. I don't think it's possible. I suggest instead that these items are simply there to prove that some of the authors of the book understood things (or were inspired to write things) that would only be understood at certain times and these can be used as faith builders for future generations. I don't think there is any good reason to use the Bible for anything more than that with regards to science.

I suggest instead that these items are simply there to prove that some of the authors of the book understood things (or were inspired to write things) that would only be understood at certain times and these can be used as faith builders for future generations. I don't think there is any good reason to use the Bible for anything more than that with regards to science.

I never meant that it was supposed to guide you in your path as a scientist or whatever, I was just making a name for my thread.

Most scientific research these days are in evolution and the big bang. Alot of scientists are just trying to find things that go against the Bible and it's teachings. Why do you think that prayer was taken out of school? Some people will do everything they can to try to make the Bible seem fake and irrelevant. That stuff was not mentioned in the Bible, but the Bible does indeed give scientific information about the world and almost everything in it. It still applies to so many situations even today.

btw geeo I'm having trouble figuring out what religion you follow.

where do you get the idea that most research is being done in order to disprove the Bible? Do you honestly believe that thousands of scientists are all thinking "what can I research that will disprove the Bible?" Not likely.

I agree that there are some people that want to make the Bible irrelevant. People that don't believe it is true have very little reason to respect it...

And I know you're having trouble figuring out what religion I follow. It's more fun that way. Part of it is simply my job as a mod. I try to keep threads going by arguing in them. I don't neccesarily believe absolutely everything I say in the Christian Conservatives or Debate sections.

I'm not saying that thousands of scientists are thinking that or whatever, what I am saying is that alot of the work that is being done is to disprove the Bible, like people trying to prove the big bang and theories like that *achoo* sorry I'm allergic to bull. lol

You should respect everyone's religion and beliefs.

You should stand up for your religion and be proud of it instead of hiding it, and not everything you say is true?...

Trying to disprove the Bible? That's news to me. I, personally, thought they were trying to prove the theory they were trying to prove. I.E. the Big Bang.
And who says it can't follow the Bible?
For example:
Perhaps God was the one who created that tiny spec of immense concentrated energy, or it was there, and he caused it to go bang. Maybe he was the one that formed everything. Who knows?

On the subject of one's religion... Knowledge is a blessing, and a curse. Knowledge is power, and power corrupts.
When one states something about him/herself, with it comes stereotypes that instantly come to the hearer's mind. These may or may not stay. Geeogree is not hiding anything, he simply does not see the need (I hope I'm interpreting this right) to say it out loud, and rather have you figure it out.

Final note:
It may or may not be true that the Bible does contain the science of God.
But maybe all this is just what the people knew/though at the time, during the writing?

noodle: oh, so you're saying that just because they are trying to understand the universe they are disproving the Bible.... I'm sorry. Scientific truth and spiritual/religious truth are inseperable. The reason they don't mesh is either becasue science isn't quite right or because your religion isn't quite right.

You "should" but you don't have to.

I've never hidden my religion. Quite a few of the members know exactly what religion I am. And I didn't say that. It's nice to see how you rephrase what I actually said though. Gives me a good idea of what to expect out of you in the future.

Maybe you should learn more about science before you tell people to respect everyones religion and beliefs.

Because at the moment you're being very ignorant and disrespectful against science.
