I have never. I'm in Ontario so we don't get intense weather like that.

There has been tornadoes both north and south of us before though.

Also thunderstorms are not uncommon here either.

Snow storms of course I have experienced those. So much snow shoveling.

I was in South Carolina in 2000 in the military during a hurricane.  It was windy.

Oh wow, really?

What do you think is more scary; the hurricane or the military?

I never been in a full force hurricane but i helped clean up the after math of hurricane Hugo when it hit South Carolina. Later i experienced a storm that was a remince of a hurricane in north west GA. The bands of winds were coming around every couple of minutes, it's kind of hard to explain but if you ever see a hurricane that has been disbanded, the rest of it comes in waves. Right now i live in a tornado alley, i been lucky so far but a lot of tornados have touched down in nearby counties and towns, so yea i have built a concrete block tornado shelter : )

The tornadoes in tornado valley have been coming in large numbers the past few years.

I would be terrified to be living in such an at risk area.

Personally I would move for that reason. Obviously though people have their reasons for staying.

I couldn't imagine having everything I've ever known destroyed in seconds. It would be devastating.

Oh :/

I'm really sorry to hear that

I hope there is no flooding where you are.

Were you ever in the greatly devastated areas?

Have you ever had to deal with destruction of any sort to your house or vehicle or anything else?

Yeah, that's the trouble with living in Florida. Seems every hurricane comes your way. Going through one right now, well, branch of one. But I've been through dozens of others (actually, probably just about a dozen... hmm.)

LolWutPear :

Isn't it a likely that tornadoes can spawn during hurricanes?

I think that is what I would be most afraid of.

Then again I have never been through one myself so I can't really say.

That and having things blown through your windows.

Is it necessary to evacuate your house during a hurricane?

Or is that only the case with some hurricanes, depending on where your house is located?

Also, where do you evacuate to?

Have been in florida..But not during hurricane season. Neither would I want too. I do love the Atlantic  much more refreshing than the Pacific over here in California. Though that beautiful ocean is the biggest cause for the hurricanes in that area..

I believe New York got hit a little by hurricane Irene last year . There was so much freaking rain to the point that it was dangerous to be outside. I was kind of scared and was hoping the storm would get better and it did but I disliked watching the news and hearing that some people died cause of the flooding the storm has created in different areas.

Oh yes, I remember hearing parts of New York and New Jersey got flooded.

We here in Ontario got a bunch of rain from that as well.

It is kind of amazing how far storms can travel. Although, they tend to get a bit stronger because they pick up water from the Great Lakes.

Every winter you hear about major snow storms hitting south of the border. Storms seem to travel along the border when they get in around Detroit and New York. They often hit Niagara, but only sometimes clip Toronto. Other times they go right up into Ontario and straight through Toronto. The more intense ones seem to miss Toronto more often than not though, fortunately for us.

bobq : Yes it has happened. I have actually been in a storm where there was a tornado brewing. I think the most intimidating part of it, though, was seeing the sky just fall; no lie, it was cloudy and when I looked to the West, there was a wall of clouds from the sky to the ground, like the cloud cover was bent. In just about that instant it just raged rain and lightning, that was when we decided to get inside. Really, though, there isn't much to be afraid of, you just have to know where you are safe (in my case, the laundry room).
Evacuation in really only necessary for really coastal areas and/or small or old buildings. I have never truly "evacuated" for a hurricane, but sometimes I wish I did, sitting in a dark house in Florida without power for three days was just annoying, no real threat (unless you are food.)

My particular area does get hit with hurricanes from time to time, but we usually to not suffer near as much damage as the Southern states. Our area took a massive amount of rain from Tropical Storm Lee last year resulting in some of the worst flooding I have seen in my life --but it is not nearly the worst our area has ever suffered.

I have been through several hurricanes.  I worry not though for I no God will keep.  I've seen the might of Katrina and many more, but yet I do sway.

Oh wow that must have been a site to see. Clouds from the sky to the ground sounds amazing and eerie at the same time. I couldn't imagine what that may have looked like in person.

Just make sure you stay safe when dangerous weather is approaching. It is not worth getting hurt just to see something cool, usually.

Well, where I live, hurricans aren't common and powerful like in other places of the world... Rarely there's one.

However, I remember our house got flooded one night due to one... It tooks us all the day clean it

I would be so rattled if my basement got flooded.

The basement is my room. I have my bed down here, and 2 couches, plus all of my clothing, and also our laundry room is down here so all the clothing in there would be drenched as well.

On top of that, I have a desktop computer, Xbox 360 and N64 down here.

I would be so Rattled. I also keep my laptop down here sometimes.
