The Game Gear and the Master System have a lot in common. They are both 8 bit, but the Game Gear has more games.

Game Gear stats
Graphics chip: Zilog Z80
Amount of colors on a screen: 32, there are 4096 colors available though and 64 sprites can be on the screen at once
Sound: It can produce stereo sound unlike the Master System.
Library size of games: about 390 games were on this handheld.

Master System stats.
Graphics: Like the Game Gear, the processor is a Zilog Z80. However it can display 64 colors on a screen at once instead of 32.
Sound: The Master System used Mono sound instead of stereo.
Size of game library: The Master System had about 320 games for it.

Lets look at a side by side comparisons of a game on both systems.

 Game Gear                                          Master System

Top is Game Gear and the bottom is the Master System.

NOTE: The Game Gear emulator does not use screen shots so I had to use the screen shot on the games page. You can still tell which one looks better.

So I think both systems are very similar. The Master System has the graphical edge because of the brighter screen and larger color pallete and the Game Gear has the best sound. If you think about it, the two systems are very different from each other. Maybe the technical stuff is what they share in common, but really the Game Gear was a powerful little handheld at the time compared to other handhelds like the green and white Gameboy.
