Does Nintendo need a new franchise?

Has Nintendo been overusing their classic franchises? Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Pokemon..all at least 20 years old (except pokemon, which is nearly 20). Are they in need of a new series?
Yes, it pains me to say it.

Before you become offended or angered by this post, please know that I am a Nintendo fan and love the company. They create games that have gameplay that is simply fantastic and don't focus on graphics as much, and their games can be both deep and simple. Nintendo is my favorite game company. But I was thinking one day, they have had the same major game series for many years. Mario, Zelda, and Metroid all started back in the 80s with the NES. New games in each series are still being made today. I don't think of this as a bad thing, in fact I think it's awesome, but is Nintendo relying too much on sequels? I realize that each game in one series can be completely different from the other, leave it to Nintendo to switch up the gameplay in awesome ways on game sequels. But still, we have not seen any new character or series that has become really popular from Nintendo for quite a while. Kid Icarus: Uprising was an original effort but even that was a sequel to a game back in the NES days. I think Nintendo should continue making quality games and sequels and continue their great franchises, but maybe try something new. The last new effort that became somewhat popular was Pikmin, and it's been 11 years since that series was introduced. Something brand new and fresh from Nintendo would be welcome. I realize that's easier said than done, but it would be nice to see a new Nintendo mascot among the greats.

Well I myself am a Netendo fan and I do think that Netendo needs to get a new franchises, in my opinion they have over used the Pokémon and Mario franchises.

Tomatoes and oregano make it Italian; wine and tarragon make it French. Sour cream makes it Russian; lemon and cinnamon make it Greek. Soy sauce makes it Chinese; garlic makes it good. - Alice May Brock

rnfoxtrot : I completely agree with you, mostly because out of all of the Nintendo franchises, mario and pokemon have changed the least. Not saying its a bad thing, sometimes it's not, but it's reached a point where all of the gameplay is the same. Fun, but the same as 15 years ago. Metroid and Zelda have changed up enough to not fall into this hole. But still, a try at a new series would be nice.

They have been trying, trust me. Nintendo creates more new IPs than sony/soft does COMBINED. The gamecube alone created at least 70 new IPs, which most have failed, but some, like Pikmin, rose to the top and became very popular.

It is moderately difficult to make a new IP while making it GOOD, due to creativity running low in modern gaming. Most other companies stick to same game elements, just using a brand new franchise to re-popularize it. Most of these are in the shooter genre while some go with RPG/adventure, like Dark/Demon souls. What differentiates all good IPs from the rest is how different it is. Pikmin was a whole different style of game altogether. It was a real-time strategy 1P game that had unique features to make it fun, which is why 2 sequels followed up on it.

TBH, I'm more in favor of keeping their older IPs and trying new things with them like Nintendo always does. And it does seem to be working, because people always give mixed opinions, giving positive and negative feedback. However, unlike MOST other companies, most that work for Nintendo tend to LISTEN to their consumers, so they can give it a shot at something else.

Nintendo has a whole lot of more popular franchises than most Gaming Systems. Considering they have been around for Decades, I think they are keeping things pretty fresh. How many games on 360 and Playstation aren't sequels or FPS games that are just a clone of everything else?

I do get what you mean but really it's a general problem in gaming itself I believe where people are having a hard time with coming up with a lot of FRESH ideas. Back in the 90's it was fun because everything was new and new tech was making HUGE jumps in gaming. Now things are evening out and things are feeling stagnant on all levels. (For me anyways)

Mario (Super)

Kart

Donkey Kong

Pokemon

Zelda

Metroid

Animal Crossing

Kirby

Smash Brothers

Starfox

Jordanv78 : I know what you're saying and I agree with you, but the list you provided..all of them are at least 10 years old. The numerous sequels that other companies release are relatively new, look at dead space, bioshock, gears of war, assassin's creed, mass effect. Nothing against Nintendo here but do you see my point?

I think what Nintendo has is already working. They are a solid company that is selling enough on Mario, Pokémon, Metroid, and everything else it has. It does not need another mascot.

manicman66 : I do agree with you that Nintendo is working, 100%. I just think it might be interesting if they create a totally new franchise. I know that they still try new things, don't get me wrong

They might need a new franchise, but the franchises they have already have. Are critically acclaimed, heck Mario galaxy got mostly the maximum score from critics. Also they are very popular, Nintendo does a good job innovating their games, and it looks like it's not going to end soon.

G@mehe@d : I never said their games today aren't acclaimed or innovative, but they use the same characters from the 80s. Why not put that innovative gameplay into a new series and story that nobody has ever heard of?

taterii : I actually haven't thought about this at all. Now that I do, there did seem to be to many Pokemon and Mario. I guess a new series could be in order. I'm guessing Nintendo just wants to focus on the titles whoses first games were incredibly successful and are worried a new franchise might ruin them. Or they're just too lazy busy. Well Nintendo does have to deal with the wii u and 3ds to put their time into. (which would be a pefect opprotunity for a new series idea actuallly)I guess their logic is: games from a well-known-series = profit
