On Sunday morning, Aug 5th, a skinhead entered a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin and opened fire, killing 6 before being killed by police himself.

Full news story: here

They haven't released the identity of the shooter, so the media hasn't jumped on it yet since there is no ratings excitement for them.

For those who do not know, Sihkism is a passive religion founded in India over 500 years ago. They are often mistaken for Muslims in America because of their religious prohibitions against cutting their beards or hair (which they wear in turbans).

This is just horrible and wrong, and I honestly don't even know what is wrong with this country or humanity in general anymore.

Yeah, I saw you post this on facebook and one of my first thoughts was, "Why a Sikh temple?". That makes no sense. I wonder if there was some sort of personal dispute or something between this person who did the shooting and members of this Sikh temple.

And I echo your sentiment.... wtf is going on? Why do so many people feel the only option they have left in order to deal with their issues is to get a gun and shoot people? I don't want to blame "mental illness" for this but I wonder if most people who commit these sorts of acts aren't at least somewhat mentally ill. We'll never know because many of them are dead but it is something I wonder.

At the moment the cops have no possible motive. The people at the Temple had never seen the man, never been threatened by anyone, nothing.

That's crazy. This makes even less sense if no one knew him.

I wonder what the police will dig up once they search this person's residence and gather background information. I'm really interested in hearing about what this brings up.

clearly in retaliation to those sikh extremists
why sikhs, seriously, theyre like, the least violent religion out there, them and buhdists.
i have to say, i called this in the dark night rises thread, this kind of thing isnt all that uncommon now.
at least it was only 6, im surprised it wasnt more, lucky the cop was there i guess.
are there a lot of sihks in wisconsin?
iv only met a handfull here. didnt seem majorly different to anyone else, they even wore jeans and shirts.

The fact that this shooting is suspected to have been carried out by a white supremacist leads us to think this could be a hate crime, yet it is still too soon to draw conclusions so it is best for us to wait until the police give a public statement.

geeogree : I only have one possible reason for a Sikh temple being the target. It pretty much ties in with what Elara explained. They are often mistaken as Muslim. These intolerant supremacist skinheads aren't really known for their ability to see the difference in things like that. Like how all Asian people are apparently either Chinese or Japanese, all people with turbans and beards are planning to attack America. This guy probably saw no difference between the two just based on sight and 'took action'.

rcarter2 : most muslims i know here are easily distinguishable.
Uk sihks wear jeans and shirts 99% of the time, they have decent sized beards(but it looks to me like they have still shaved it a bit) and wear a turban.
The muslims dont wear turbans, they tend to wear casual clothese, jeans and a colurfull shirt, red mostly, usually, and they dont have particularly long hair, usually they have a short cropped beard.
I think the reduced amount of hair is due to in Britain to look tidy you are meant to be clean shaved, a lot of employers dont hire people with runaway hair.
I take it then they are far more similar in america.
And yeh, skinheads arent famed for there intelect

Well, if you watch the video that runs at that top of the news page that I posted you can get a good look at what the Sikh's look like... granted they are dressed up for their church service in more traditional attire.

But yeah, I've never seen a Muslim in a turban... but the stereotype here is that they were them, and that is where the mistake comes into play.

thenumberone : The guys here dress like everyone else. The women do tend to wear the hijab (the veil that covers their hair) and the long cloak like outfit. Not all though. I have only seen a couple people wearing turbans myself.

Has anyone else noticed that whenever one mass shooting occurs, then others follow in suit? I don't get it. Do they think it's like a trend or something? I'm baffled. Why do people go out and shoot innocents people? They never did anything to them. What do they do, just wake up one morning and say; "I think I'll go shoot some people today." And then after they do it, they act like nothing happened. What is wrong with these people? I would hate to think they weren't crazy because if they aren't mentally ill, then they're definitely even more sadistic.

SunflowerGaming: Usually that tends to happen as the media will cover the shooting a lot and people who have problems who see the report are more inclinded to also do a mass shooting. It's like public execution during the Medieval Ages. When people gather around to watch someone who is guilty of commiting a crime, some people will after watching it attempt to commit a similar crime because they see how "popular" the person who first got executed had a lot of attention.

What is the point of shooting people that did nothing to you. I get it if you are angry, but don't take it out on innocent people. There is something seriously wrong with people today.

Oldschool41 : Yeah, I noticed a lot of people do it because they think it will make them popular. But that is definitely not the kind of popularity I'd want to have. It's not a good thing, even though they crave attention so badly they'd do anything to get it. I'd rather be ignored than harm another living thing. I don't get why they think it's some sort of trend and the need to follow suit. Just makes me completely sick!
