The video game crash of 1983 As the golden age of video games continued. More and more third party software companies were designing games for the Atari 2600. As more video games were being made. The quality in the games was starting to decrease. Making plenty of consumers angry for spending money on a bad game. That is probably one of the biggest reasons the crash of 83' happened. Another contributor to the video game crash of 1983, was a game called E.T It was based on the movie. How the game got brought in the video game market, started with the movie, because it was so popular and it made millions of dollars. Atari thought that if they made a game based on the movie, it would sell. They met with Steven Spielberg, he was the producer of the movie. They met with him so that they could get the licence to make a game based on the film. When they got the licence Ray Kassar asked Howard Scott Warshaw. To create the game, here's the problem. Speilburg and Universal Pictures wanted him to be done with the game by the beginning of September, which was about 5 week away. He got offered a lot of money, so he designed the game. When the game was complete, Atari made millions of cartridges and sent them to stores. The game sold well, it sold 1.5 million copies, but about twice that amount were unsold forcing Atari to bury all of them in a land fill in New Mexico. As innovative as the game was, it was terrible. I played the game and it was not fun. I only played the game for nostalgic reasons.
Nintendo enters the poor market: People lost interest in video games after the horrible video game crash, but Nintendo had released the Famicom which was the Japanese version of the NES. In Japan the video game industry was doing well. Nintendo made the NES and had to do something to make people want to buy it. So they advertised it as an entertainment system and added a bunch of little accessory's like R.O.B "Robot Operating Buddy" that helped Nintendo gain sales in North America. Eventually Nintendo had nearly the entire market of video games. There were plenty of systems made to compete with the NES, like the Sega Master System it did not have a very large grasp on the market though.Famicom Japan NES, North America Nintendo success got even better when they released the Game boy. The first successful handheld game system. The Game boy was primitive and basic compared to the Atari Lynx which was released at around the same time. It featured color graphics and even a connection to people around the world. This feature did not become popular until the DS came out. The Game boy however was cheaper and had a longer battery life. The best selling game for the Game boy was Tetris, designed in Russia, and brought to America. The game was a good type of game for the Game Boy. It was easier to play then a lot of the games for the Game Boy. The 16-bit era begins: In 1989 Sega wanted to make a system that would destroy Nintendo for sure. They thought of an innovative 16-bit console that had a fast processor that they claimed in their commercials as "blast processing". It never became a success until they released Sonic the Hedgehog. Sega made Sonic to replace their earlier mascot Alex Kid. Sonic was also made to show off the Genesis's capabilities. As small as the game was, it was a critical and commercial success. It is the best selling Sonic game and that is pretty obvious. Once Sonic came along, Sega gained 65% of the market. At around the same time, Nintendo released the SNES, which had better graphics and sound. Still the Sega Genesis sold more then the SNES. This formed competition of the two companies which eventually ended during the 32-bit era of video games. I would consider it a tie, because the SNES did not beat the Genesis until Sega released the 32X and the Sega CD as add on's for the Genesis. They were both commercial failures and they both had one thing they lacked, games. The 32X had very few impressive titles, and the Sega CD library was packed with grainy full motion video titles. During the rivalry of Sega and Nintendo several innovative but not successful consoles were released, consoles like the Neo Geo were expensive and still are on Ebay and other auction web sites. Sonic the Hedgehog 32-bit consoles make 3D arcade games come home: To may surprise the only 2 really popular 32-bit consoles were the Sega Saturn and the Playstation. However there were a ton of innovative 32-bit consoles out there. The first one was the 3DO which used the CD format as a way to hold it's games, it also had multiple designs. It did not have very many games for it though and it was very expensive. Another 32-bit console that was a failure was the Atari Jaguar. Atari claimed the system as 32-bit because of it's wide range of processors but it was not 64-bit it was 32-bit, it was a big failure that ended Atari's console making business. Then we have the Playstation, the only 32-bit console that got major attention in the video game market. Not only did it have 3D polygon capabilities stronger then any console around but it had a huge library of games and several franchise starters like Crash Bandicoot, Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider, and many more. Surprisingly the system was actually meant to be an add on for the SNES, but Sony wanted to make all the software so this led to the company's spiting apart and Sony created the Playstation. I did not mention all of the 32-bit consoles in existence. I will make a list of all the video game consoles someday. I gained my information from various websites but I guess my thread was a rewording of the wikipedia article. Was my thread at least good? I made it as best as I can make it. I am going to make part 3, and for this part I'm going try harder to not make anything as close as the wikipedia article. |
