Actually there has been research showing that cats might be a little smarter than dogs. It sorta mentions how cats have way more independant thought. Also dogs are clumsy, don't keep themselves clean (like cats do) and dogs dont have nearly as much common sense as cats do.
The overall study showed that both animals are smart in different ways.

I really dont see how you can figure out how smart an animal is, you'd have to be able to talk with it or give it a test to find out it's true intelligence. Cats are just way to independent and lazy to figure out how smart they really are..
