I'm using a laptop which I got from an ex-girlfriend (it was previously hers) and at every boot it gives this message:

"cannot load dialog error 623 the system could not find the phone book for this entry"

I click ok on the box about 10 times before my router connects. I've done a lot of stuff to prevent it from popping up, but no success.

Sometimes it prevents me from connecting, but then I'l press Fn+F8 and it will connect.

Anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

I also have a connection error that might be related to this but I'm not sure - I have to constantly re-save my settings at 192.168.1.1 and sometimes that doesn't even load until I click "repair" on the internet icon at my taskbar.

Ok this is newbie questions since I'm not used to dial up or dsl but I don't know what connection you have or provider.

Have you checked your firewall settings?
Scanned for addware, spyware, viruses, rootkits? (AVG and Malware Bytes will cover all of these)

Next have you contacted your provider to see if they know how to solve this problem?

RequiemHaunt : Heh, only that last question would be relevant, but I' trying to avoid my contacting my cable provider - it's a big hassle whenever I do; I do pay them monthly though but still, they'll say "OK, we will make an appointment to come check it out" which is sometimes a service fee.

All that other stuff is perfect

I just remember my dad had bad junk on his comp that blocked him from going online. That's why I asked about the viruses/spyware stuff. Sometimes also firewall can sometimes accidently decide to block the connection to the internet. I had that happen. I had norton firewall and I had to finally uninstall it because it would keep blocking my internet connection.

Sometimes the connection can be the providers fault and that should be looked into at some time.

RequiemHaunt : Ironically my anti virus' firewall is disabled because my internet provider has their own. lol... it's looking more like my internet providers fault.

I would still like to know what that error 623 is though without calling someone out to tel me in person at a fee lol.

I assume the answer is probably yes, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Did you try Googling your error and seeing how other people have resolved this same issue?

A quick Google search of my own led me to this, which looks like it could be useful.

tRIUNE : I found this quote on a forum by doing a google search, which you may have already done, but I just wanted to post it just in case:

"I solved it by going to Control Panel / Internet Options / Connections and setting the dial setting to never dial a connection. It had been reset to dial when a connection is not available."

This is why I don't get used laptops!
tRIUNE:
Anyway, try turning off your firewall, (I wouldn't try it) turn off/down your Antivirus program, and/or turn off/change your router's password type!

The settings at 192.168.1.1 are actually stored within your router, if you have to reset these every time, I feel like the problem is coming from there. The reason you then have to reset your Windows settings is because you just reset the router while Windows was connected.

Is it possible to try another router, or to bypass it completely and just go straight from your modem to your PC?

Ok, I remember now thanks to some replies here - I had to go out of town and use this hotels dial-up - I had to reset the internet options to dial a connection.

Jordanv78 : Thanks man.

Lazlo Falconi : I think the problem was that my rommie didn't have the antennas on the router pointed upward as well as he had the the router shoved between the back of his desk in his room. So yeah, I asked him about that and that seems to fixed it.

Okay, so the problem's solved then? If you're still having problems, just PM me and I'll reopen this thread.
