Why can't i load games properly?

I believe I properly saved Pokémon blue, but when I went to load it later on, I couldn't get past the title sequence. It just kept showing me different Pokémon, and enter did not allow me to start the game. When I don't load a game, it works fine, but of course I can't play my save with only the new game option. If it matters, I am not using the plug in, because there is no Mac version of it.
