Got this from the other site I go to. Pretty interesting.

http://gizmodo.com/5901595/study-two-beers-makes-you-clever

If you're hung up on a brain-twizzling problem, crack a brew. A new study from the University of Illinois suggest that, contrary to common belief, alcohol's buzz might actually improve your problem-solving skills.

A team from the University of Illinois at Chicago and led by Professor Jennifer Wiley believes that inebriation might enhance the mind's "working memory capacity." This is how well one pays attention to a specific subject. "It's the ability to remember one thing while you're thinking about something else," Wiley said. By lowering this capacity, the mind becomes more adept at lateral thinking strategies and novel solutions.

The team found that test subjects with a BAC of .07 (just under legally drunk in most states) struggled with attention-intensive trials but excelled at questions that required more flexible thinking. The study found that the drunks not only solved 40 percent more questions than their sober control group, they did so three and a half seconds faster as well—completing their tests in 12 seconds compared to 15.5 for the sobers.

"The bottom line is that we think being too focused can blind you to novel possibilities, and a broader, more flexible state of attention is needed for creative solutions to emerge," said Wiley. The findings certainly makes sense, given alcohol's reputation as a social and intellectual lubricant.

Funny thing is that when I get a buzz I do actually feel like jump into the middle of a political debate or something. Kinda weird. So that means those drunk threads I've made here were actually intellectual stories. From a drunk. Sort of.

Hehe..... interesting.... I'll be sure to remember that when I'm old enough to drink that stuff. It's so depressing to only be 13; there's so many things that you want to do in your life but can't because you're restricted by laws/ rules.

Huh. I always thought that drinking while I program was a terrible idea. Now I suppose I'll do it a lot more often.

Sounds about right. I usually don't drink much but I can see how it would help, I'm always thinking what if I'm wrong or hesitant to answer so I think beer would help me to not think about the what ifs and just speak my mind.

The only reason I could see that drinking beer would make you "smarter" would be that alcohol, if not too much has been drunk, will open up your mind and let you think a little outside the box. That's how it would make sense to me.

This is clearly more for those situations where it is better to not over think things. It is easy to think too hard, slowing you down or causing you to think against your gut feeling. Taking the edge off can make you not over think it. My question is how many people would be able to drink just enough to take the edge off and not drink a little too much

I've known this since I was 13 and had my first alcoholic beverages.  The world lit up around me and my personality was enhanced.  I'm glad someone did a study on this.  Sadly, most every drug I've tried does this and then when you attempt to increase it by consuming more it takes a turn in the opposite direction.

Drinking maybe 3-6 drinks I'm fine and become more and more witty and intelligent but eventually that reaches it's pinnacle and reverses the effect turning me into a moron.  LOL.

Right around 4 drinks is when you're smooth enough to flirt with a girl and keep her interested.  Right around 8 drinks is when you're becoming annoying and people don't wanna be around you (unless they're also on that level).

If I'm gonna do it though I go all out...  which means 20 drinks later my friends and I are all fighting and doing stupid things that we barely remember in the morning.  Luckily we do that in a safe environment and the only ones that pay for it are ourselves the next day.

I am not a very big fan of alcohol or the feeling of being drunk, but I can see why this could be plausible!

It's not really that you get drunk, because as Kryptic said, it'll make things worse. It's only to the point you have a good buzz going. That's the state I like to be in. I'm a lot more open, chill and generally I "feel" more intelligent and am able to create opinions of something when I am otherwise sober.

It's an interesting study, that's for sure...

But this kinda seems like a "common sense" thing. We know that people drink to relax, to ease stress. Feeling more relaxed helps stimulate more creative thinking. Not a lot of people can do anything well under stress. Drinking hinders the senses and thought processes.

People with alcohol in their system don't perform well in attention-intensive trials. Duh.

People with alcohol perform well under flexible thinking trials. Interesting, but also duh.

All this article did (as well as the study that was linked as a source) was show something that we already know. It doesn't really answer the "So what?" question, in my opinion.

It may be a bit of a common sense thing, but I don't think a lot of people realize it. One drinks to get wasted or to relax, not with the intent to discuss what the genome complexity of a dodo bird was. While most people have probably guessed that they felt a bit more intelligent, this article confirmed it for them. As was the case for me.

Hmm at first I thought it wasn't true. I mean I've had several periods of a good buzz, but I have realized that most people do better when they are intoxicated....I guess.

1000 vizz says most all of the people that did the study were guys.

I like how it says 'noval' ideas.
Isnt that just another way of saying stupid.

Obviously you answer quicker and more assuredly, when youre drinking you think you could solve every problem in the world in half a day.

Na, im not gonna do this, my college wouldnt aprove =p

Really? Wow, I should drink more beers in that case, or give some to the people who rule the world. They will get a IQ better than the one they actually have and they think twice before doing some stuff

So this means when I turn 21, I will be drinking just enough to get a Blood Alcohol Level of .07 , that way I can pay better attention to driving, and the cops can't do anything about my buzz.

Now that's not to say you should go out driving. You intelligence might increase for a while, but your JUDGMENT is still affected. It's different from person to person, but don't go testing yourself.
